Tick, Tick... BOOM!

Written by composer of ground breaking musical “RENT “, “Tick, Tick… Boom! ” is an autobiographical rock musical based on Larson’s life in NYC as a struggling composer. The musical takes place during the week leading up to Jonathan’s thirtieth birthday, and explores concepts of identity, expression and societal expectation. It’s an incredibly intimate piece, with a high energy rock score to match. Originally a one-man show which was performed as a “Rock-Monologue” by Jonathan himself prior to “RENT “, the show was re-adapted by playwright David Auburn in 2001 to be performed by a company of three performers. We are looking to take a narrative that masquerades as a period-piece but is, in fact, totally contemporary at its thematic core and stage it with a modern and refreshing mentality. This is a musical that is, at its surface, as intertwined to its era as it is to its powerful, raw and dynamic range of music. This tragic story of an artist who never learnt of the unbelievable impact his work would have on a generation simply cannot be told enough times, and provides an invaluable insight into the mind of a man well ahead of his time.

Our production of “Tick, Tick… Boom! ” will be staged in the MC Showroom, a newly opened theatre and performance space in Prahran that thrives on the artistic vision of young artists, and is a proud supporter of independent Australian work. The intimate nature of the small theatre provides the perfect setting for Larson’s work.

Male 18-25 years old, vocal range Bb2 to Gb4

Strong baritone/tenor vocals. A former actor who gave up his passion to become a Market Research Executive. Roommate and childhood friend of Jonathan. Career-minded and image conscious but an artist at heart. Michael is caring and supportive of Jonathan’s struggling career.

The actor playing “Michael” will also have to play a variety of smaller roles throughout the show. We are looking for someone with a strong stage presence, who is ready to show off a large range in acting, singing, and isn’t afraid to move.
