Hot Mikado

Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc is proud to announce auditions for their May 2018 production of HOT MIKADO, which will be performed at the Centenary Theatre, Williamstown from Friday 18th May to Saturday 26th May 2018..

Nanki-poo, hiding a shocking secret, returns to Japan disguised as a wandering minstrel, in search of his lover, Yum-Yum – only to find that in his absence, she has been betrothed to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner of Titipu. Hot on his trail is Katisha, Nanki-Poo’s jealous and devious fiance, who will stop at nothing to snare Nanki-Poo for herself. Meanwhile, Ko-Ko finds himself in need of a sacrificial victim, since his cowardly nature has prevented him from fulfilling his quota of executions. When Katisha arrives in search of Nanki-poo, and the Mikado himself follows in search of his long lost son, the town is thrown into panic and confusion. Will Nanki-Poo be able to hide his true identity and avoid execution? Will Ko-Ko find himself a suitable candidate to execute? Can true love win the day?

HOT MIKADO is a hilarious and ‘HOT’ updating of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Mikado’, and weaves a sharp witted, fun-filled tale where despite life or death stakes, characters still find time to croon their troubles away. Set in a fictionalized Japan, at a time when outlandish laws sentence people to death for almost any indiscretion, it is the language of jazz, gospel and the blues that is spoken most fluently.

The rambunctious musical style, which regularly quotes Sullivan’s original score and Gilbert’s lyrics, will be filled with fast-paced choreography, mind-blowing vocals and laughs galore, and is guaranteed to leave you tapping your toes in time to the swinging score.

Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor E3 to G4
Dance Ability: Strong Movement

The ruler and big “Cat” of Japan, yet carefree and relaxed, the Mikado loves a good joke and just wants every criminal’s punishment to serve as entertainment.. Although his demeanor is never serious, he is very strict about following the laws of the city, as inconvenient as they may be.

Stage Age: Early twenties

Vocal Range: Tenor Eb3 to Bb4

Dance Ability: Competent Movement

The long lost son of the Mikado, Nanki-Poo is in love with Yum-Yum but betrothed to Katisha. A young, handsome and hopeless romantic, oblivious to the effect he has on women, he will do anything to be with Yum-Yum, the girl who has stolen his heart.

Stage Age: Mid twenties to mid thirties

Vocal Range: Tenor, C2 to Bb 4
Dance Ability: Competent Movement

Appointed as Yum-Yum’s guardian and consequently now betrothed to her, Ko-Ko is theatrical and flamboyant yet clumsy and cowardly, and the most unlikely candidate for his position of Lord High Executioner. He takes great pride in having such power, but can’t actually bring himself to execute anyone.

The sweet and bubbly middle child, Yum-Yum is betrothed to Ko-Ko but in love with Nanki-Poo. She is emotional and at times completely self-absorbed, thinking that she is more attractive than anybody else in the whole world.
