No sooner has Mary Poppins has flown to Sydney than a brand new musical has taken up residence at Her Majesty’s and today media had a sneak peek.
The imposing Banks residence on Cherry Tree Lane has made way for a new world, or Two Worlds in fact judging by the opening number.
The opening setting for act one:
And the stark, chilling set for act two:
Co-Producer John Frost introduced composer Lucy Simon. Simon spoke of the thrilling day that Producer Anita Waxman dropped over to her New York apartment with Frost and leading man Anthony Warlow, already a favourite of Simon’s from when he starred in previous hit musical, The Secret Garden.
Broadway’s Des McAnuff has returned to the US and now the production is in the capable hands of Shaun Murphy, who was also a member of the cast of the Australian cast of The Secret Garden.
Murphy is also a member of the cast of Doctor Zhivago.
Warlow and Lucy Maunder performed the emotional act two duet “On The Edge of Time”.
The full cast performed the opening number “Two Worlds”.
The dramatic ending of the number was tantalising indeed.
Doctor Zhivago’s official Melbourne opening night is Thursday 24 April. Guests, wearing a ‘splash of red’ will celebrate afterwards at The Long Room.
