What is especially remarkable is the playwright’s clear-eyed view of both the fragility and beauty of human life.

Do Not Go Gentle grapples with existential questions of love, death, loss and happiness through the journey of six ageing people.

A poignant and compelling drama, Do Not Go Gentle written by Award-winning Australian playwright and author, Patricia Cornelius (Who’s Afraid of the Working Class, Love)
is a brilliantly humorous exploration of the ageing process that highlights the fragility and beauty of human life.

Cornelius explains that Do Not Go Gentle is about people’s dreams, aspirations and achievements and explores the regret about what you forget, because you choose to, because it eludes you, because the memory is too sweet, or too painful and to think of it is insufferable.

Do Not Go Gentle is set in a metaphorical landscape of icy plateaux, crevasses and labyrinths. This God-forsaken place provides a brilliant background to the stories of six people living out the end of their lives in a nursing home. The process of ageing and the exploration of one’s life when one is almost at the end of it are delicately intertwined and juxtaposed with the Antarctic and the infamous journey of the Scott expedition.

‘This is a play brilliant in conception and execution. The script is rich in pathos, wit, complex characterisation and bold formal challenges. What is especially remarkable is the playwright’s clear-eyed view of both the fragility and beauty of human life." Chris Mead, on behalf of the judges for the Patrick White Award.

Patricia Cornelius is an award-winning playwright, a founding member of Melbourne Workers’ Theatre, as well as director, and novelist. Winner of the 2007 Patrick White Award, she has written over twenty plays including Who’s Afraid of the Working Class, Do Not Go Gentle and Love, winner of the 2004 Wal Cherry Play of the Year Award and the 2006 AWGIE for Stage and her first novel, My Sister Jill was published in 2002.
