Cy Coleman is the latest composer to be featured in a song cycle by Flourish Productions, following the success of The Songs of Ahrens & Flaherty and The Songs of Alan Menken.
Director Scott Hendry was already familiar with the works of Cy Coleman – even some of his lesser known and more obscure musicals. Hendry had studied Coleman’s work during his years at WAAPA and still owned a collection of Cy Coleman musical cast recordings on CD. He listened to them all again to select the songs to showcase in this latest song cycle: Cy By Cy By Cy. Hendry also read a newly released biography on Cy Coleman titled You Fascinate Me as part of his research and preparation.
To select the material to be included in Cy By Cy By Cy, Hendry considered the style and content of each song. As he explains, Coleman’s music styles covered country, R’n’B, Rock & Roll, Operetta and 70s disco and represented a colourful range of characters such as hookers, hustlers, dancers and circus freaks.
“I’ve managed to craft together a couple of sets that show the breadth and depth of a lot of his work, but I’ve also tried to link them, so it sort of tells a story without being a musical,” explained Hendry.
It’s quite an interesting mix of songs from shows such as Sweet Charity, City of Angels, Barnum and other Cy Coleman musicals. Some songs will be well known to audiences, but Hendry has also included material that will be new to most people, including a song from Welcome to the Club which only ran for twelve performances on Broadway but was still nominated for two Tony Awards. It’s a very unique opportunity to hear this rarely performed work.
Cy Coleman came from a jazz background and some of his jazz songs have also been incorporated into the song cycle. The location at Bennett’s Lane Jazz Club makes for the ideal setting and Hendry suggests audience members can imagine they are sitting in a basement in New York.
Bringing the songs of Cy Coleman to life in this song cycle will be an incredibly talented group of performers: Henry Brett, Meg Hoult (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Eurobeat), Hollie James, Luigi Lucente (Wicked, Jersey Boys) Nicole Melloy ( Legally Blonde, Rocky Horror) and Stephen Wheat (Georgy Girl, Legally Blonde). The show will be Musically Directed by Lucy O’Brien.
Hendry suggests any audiences who loved the recent productions of Sweet Charity and City of Angels will enjoy hearing some of these wonderful songs again, as well as discovering other songs from the huge catalogue of music by Cy Coleman.
