2011 – What can I say?  You’ve been the year our voice broke.

After 10 years of sailing the Victorian theatrical waters, we went national and for the past six months, we’ve dipped our toes in the other states and are now getting a feel for the incredible depth of talent that’s out there.
It’s amazing to see the nuances between states and how each company operates.  While some things differ greatly (check out Harvest Rain –  a unique and interesting company that successfully bridged the pro/am gap in Queensland), much remains the same (warring factions between some amateur/community/non professional companies for example).  Seriously, why can’t we all just get along?  Some communities are incredibly well connected and others don’t seem to speak to each other at all.  We hope to play a role in bridging that gap in the years to come.

We’ve only just begun to get a taste of what’s out there and we look forward to further developing our relationships with theatre companies across Australia, as well as our readership, which continues to grow exponentially.  Speaking of readership… Wow!.  We’ve been blown away by the growth in our readership over the past 12 months.  We started the year with around 16,000 readers and will finish with just over 31,000 (that equates to over 60,000 visits a month).  Amazing!  We are glad you like what we do, but we’re always open to feedback, so please make sure you drop us a line with any ideas you have to [email protected]

Looking back at 2011 I’m incredibly proud of our new site and everything we’ve been able to achieve and that’s due to the fantastic people in the Theatre People team.  Our Editor in Chief, Ian Nisbet,  cut his teeth with us this year and I think you’ll all agree, he’s done an amazing job taking over the editorial content. I’d also like to thank our Reviews Managers Anne Dewar and Angus Cameron who work tirelessly behind the scenes to arrange the multitude of reviews we produce. Just on that… we’ve had another record year for reviews!  Well done guys.

I’d also like to thank editorial team including Kris, Michelle, Simon, Brent, Kirsty, Robbie, Renee, Emily, Frances,  Sarah, Brian, Will and Steve (oh God I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone!) who work tirelessly to generate all the wonderful content you see.  Big thanks to those who have come and gone over the year including Mel, Ash, Kaitlin, Xanthe, Jasper, Laura, Sean  & Adele.  I’d also like to thank our admin/financial team – Sally and Richard and our web gurus Tim and Jon for their stellar efforts over the past 12 months.  Big thanks to Nathan Toovey too for our wonderful new logo!

Then there’s the army of writers, sub editors, reviewers, on screen hosts, videographers and other casual staff that make up the extended theatre people family.  This army numbers in the hundreds, so come in close and let me all give you a collective hug to show my appreciation.  The contribution you’ve made to the site, and therefore your community, is invaluable and we are incredibly grateful for everything you’ve done.

I would also like to thank our loyal advertisers and our new clients who have been with us in 2011.  We hope we’ve made a positive impact on your business and we look forward to working with you again in 2012.  A big shout out to all our PR contacts too including JP, Suzie Howie, Mayuca Pandithage, Deb McInnes, Annette Vieusseux, Kerry O’Brien, Geoff Sirmai, Ian Phipps & Julie Kavanagh  – There are lots more… too many to mention!  It’s been a pleasure working with you all.   We’d also like to thank our sponsorship partners, Theatre Woks and the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria.

Last and by no means least, I’d like to thank you…our readers.  We do our absolute best to bring you the latest and greatest from our national theatre community and we hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage.  We really value your feedback, comments and interactivity across the site, so please drop us a line on the site, Facebook page, Twitter or good old email.  We are always looking to grow our team, so if you’d like to work with us, please check out the work with us page CLICK HERE

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe, happy and of course… a very theatrical new year.

Cheers,

Hughesy
