Born in 1995 (a fine year if Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ topping the ARIA Singles Chart is anything to go by) this March Chapel Off Chapel will shed the torn jeans of its teenage years for a glamorous 20th birthday bash.
To help celebrate, a diverse range of past performers will return to the theatre for a week long series of special shows, including Chapel favourites Dolly Diamond, Mama Alto, Vertical Shadows Dance Company, and Andrew Cook and Loren Hunter.
Set in one of the oldest churches in Victoria, having been built 33 years after the first settlement of Melbourne in 1858, Chapel Off Chapel has been described by Australian theatre and film stalwart Geoffrey Rush as “an industrious hotbed (for the arts)”.
Chapel Off Chapel is proud to be presenting one of its greatest weeks of one-off performances yet. From dance, to comedy, to musical theatre and gallery exhibitions, there will be something for everyone from March 16-21.
Andrew Cook and Loren Hunter (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom) have put together an evening of music, titled We Got This Covered, especially for the occasion. Covering classics from musicals past to the pop hits of today, expect the unexpected in this evening of beautiful music from two of the most stunning vocalists Australian theatre has to offer.
Stephen Agisilaou’s Vertical Shadows Dance Company is also proud to present a brand new work exclusively for Chapel Off Chapel’s 20th Anniversary. PARALLAX: A Brief Love Encounter indulges in the unforeseen shot of adrenaline driven by the infatuating nature of an uncontrollable short-term relationship.
Countertenor diva, jazz singer and cabaret artiste Mama Alto will perform a special one-night only revue, The Mama Alto Revue, in proud collaboration with Miss Chief, revisiting some of her favourite musical moments. Always mesmerizing!
The one-and-only Dolly Diamond will return to the venue which hosted her very first Australian show for what will no doubt be a very special night, An Evening with Dolly Diamond with help from Cameron Thomas. Come along and join Dolly as she re-visits her roots.
Young Australian musical theatre writing duo, and Home Grown co-founders, Nick Hedger and Ben Nicholson will be joined by Alana Tranter (Miss Saigon), Emily Milledge (La Cage Aux Folles, Carrie) and Jennifer Reed (Assassins, Children of Eden) as they give you Worth The Breath, an intimate concert featuring the songs and stories behind their developing musicals and more.
Galleries at Chapel Off Chapel will also be getting involved with the festivities, with a free exhibition, Retrospect, showcasing some of the venue’s favourite works by past exhibitors from March 17- April 2.
Come on down and join the party!
