Set in an isolated cottage on the Thames Estuary in 1885, a former showgirl/actress, Miss Fiske, and her long-time companion and housemate, Ellen, become involved in competing schemes that grow more sinister after the arrival at their home of Ellen’s two sisters. A surprise turn of events will keep you glued to the unfolding story that has been described as one of the best stage thrillers of its time.
First staged in 1939 as England was starting WWII, London was in a blackout, and most theatres were closed it was an enormous hit, running for a total of 301 performances.
A veteran of nearly 50 productions, some of our director, Martin Gibbs’s, previous productions at Mordialloc include GASLIGHT, THE ENTERTAINER, THE COLLECTOR, THE SHOEHORN SONATA, VISITING MR. GREEN, ALBERT NOBBS, AUSTRALIA DAY and MR. BAILEY’S MINDER.
Lucy Gilham, maid – 20’s to early 30’s – medium role. Pretty, flighty, easily led.
Leonora Fisk, cottage owner – probably 60’s to 70’s – large role but only required in Act 1. Retired ex-showgirl/actress. Theatrical in manner, good hearted with a quick wit and rather quick temper.
Ellen Creed – housekeeper/companion – mid 50’s to mid 60’s – major role. Authoritative and striking in manner with considerable dignity.
Albert Feather, Ellen’s nephew – early 20’s to mid 30’s – medium role. A “jack-the–lad”, dodgy, cocky, jaunty and impudent, but lazy – popular with the ladies.
Louisa Creed, elder sister of Ellen and Emily – late 60’s to late 70’s – medium role. Simple like a child, fluttering and fretful but at times decidedly comical.
Emily Creed, elder sister of Louisa and Ellen – late 60’s to late 70’s – medium role. Simple, sullen and resents her inability to fend for herself.
Sister Theresa, Catholic nun – 50 to 70 – small role. Jolly and cheerful.
The above ages and descriptions are a guide only. We are looking for actors who look right, and who can play the ages stated and not necessarily be that age. So please don’t wait to be asked if you feel you could play any of the characters. No roles have been precast.

Antonio, a prosperous merchant of Venice in the sixteenth century, is approached by
his old friend Bassanio for a loan. Bassanio wishes to present himself in style and
travel to Belmont, in order to woo Portia, a young and beautiful heiress. Antonio’s
fortune is currently tied up in his trading ships, and he does not have the required
funds in hand. However, he agrees to act as guarantor, if Bassanio can borrow the
money elsewhere. Bassanio approaches Shylock, a Jewish moneylender. Shylock
hates Antonio, who has always treated him with contempt because he is Jewish, and
because he charges interest on money that he lends. However, Shylock agrees to loan
Bassanio 3000 ducats, to be repaid in three months. Pretending that it is a mere jest,
he specifies that the penalty for failure to pay on time will be a pound of Antonio’s
flesh, cut from his breast. Confident that his ships will return to Venice in good time
so that the debt can be repaid, Antonio accepts this condition for the bond.
Shylock’s daughter Jessica elopes with Lorenzo, fleeing her father’s house with much
of her father’s money, with the intention of becoming a Christian. Shylock is furious
at the loss of both his daughter and his ducats.
Under the terms of her late father’s will, no suitor may marry Portia unless they
choose correctly between three caskets, made respectively of gold, silver and lead.
Portia complains to Nerissa, her maid and confidant, about her lack of freedom to
make her own choice of husband. Unsuccessful suitors choose wrongly, and go
disappointed away. Bassanio, with his young friend Gratiano, sails to Belmont, where
Bassanio chooses the correct casket, to Portia’s delight. Portia and Bassanio prepare
to marry, as do Nerissa and Gratiano.
News comes to Belmont that Antonio’s ships have been unexpectedly delayed; he
cannot repay the loan on time, and Shylock will demand his pound of flesh at the
Duke of Venice’s court. Portia and Nerissa disguise themselves as men – a learned
lawyer and her clerk – and travel to Venice, where Portia uses brilliant legal argument
to confound Shylock’s malicious intentions, and save Antonio’s life.
After the trial Portia and Nerissa, still disguised, will accept no payment, but each
asks only for a ring which she has given her husband, who has sworn never to part
with it. Bassanio and Gratiano very reluctantly give the lawyer and clerk these
precious rings. Portia and Nerissa later have fun upbraiding their husbands for giving
away the rings, before the deception is revealed and all ends happily.

The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare’s best loved plays. This production is
to be set in the original sixteenth century, with period costumes.
The play has approximately 23 named characters, and 11 major roles (with dialogue
in between 5 and 9 of the 20 scenes) need to be played by individual actors. Five
other characters are significant but appear in only one or two of the scenes, and it
would be possible for one actor to play more than of these roles. Two roles that are
nominally male could be played by either a man or a woman. The full cast may
number about 15 or 16, including between 3 and 6 women, depending on the outcome
of the auditions.
Auditions will be open, reading from sections of the script, and there is no
requirement to learn or prepare anything in advance. It will be of assistance if
candidates who have auditioned remain at their audition session to read against other

About the Show: On the back of the success of ‘Sugarbabies: A Boylesque Musical’, ‘Scoundrels’ is a brand
new boylesque revue that delves into a world of love, jealousy, betrayal, lust and infidelity- all those deadly
sins that we hold near and dear to our hearts. In a cabaret courtroom, the beautiful Ziegfeld Boys stand trial
for the various sins they have committed against one another. The show is a brilliant blend of old world
burlesque, musical theatre and clever comedy dipped in sensuality and dusted with sequins.

Rehearsals will take place in the two weeks leading up to the season. Rehearsals will take place between
9am and 5pm, however, will be somewhat flexible and negotiated between performers and company.
What we are looking for: The Ziegfeld boys pay tribute to the golden age of Hollywood and Broadway whilst
deconstructing the traditional roles it defines, giving a fresh take on the genre. We are looking for strong
male singers who are good movers – dance training will be a big advantage. We are looking for performers
who are self-confident and willing to be a bit cheeky. We are actively seeking performers of colour for this
show. Performers of all vocal ranges are encouraged to apply.

In 1959, Rydell High School’s students are starting a new year. (“Alma Mater Parody”)
Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl at school and Danny Zuko, the leader of the ‘Burger Palace Boys’, had a brief romantic fling over the summer. Sandy recounts her version of the fling to the ‘Pink Ladies’ (Jan, Marty, Frenchy, and Betty Rizzo), while Danny tells the boys (Roger, Doody, Sonny, and Kenickie) his rendition (“Summer Nights”). Sandy and Danny soon bump into each other at school, and while Sandy is happy to see him, he plays it cool. Meanwhile, the kids gather in the hall as Doody shows off his new guitar. The rock star wannabe gives an impromptu concert in the hall (“Those Magic Changes”).
At Marty’s pajama party, the girls give each other pierced ears, and talk about boys. Marty tells about her long-distance courtship with Freddy (“Freddy, My Love”). Meanwhile, the Burger Palace Boys are bust stealing hubcaps and teasing Kenickie about his new (used) car (“Greased Lightning”).
Danny sees Sandy again and tries to apologize for his behavior. Head cheerleader Patty Simcox interrupts to prompt Sandy to join to squad and to tease Danny about his latest indiscretions (“Rydell Fight Song”). The kids take their newfangled portable radios for a rock and roll picnic in the park and plan how they will pair off at the upcoming school prom, while Roger shares his love for Jan and his favorite hobby (“Mooning”). Rizzo teases Danny for falling for a girl who resembles the excessively proper teenage ingenue, Sandra Dee (“Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee”). Sandy realizes that Danny is putting her off to be cool and wishes she had never met him.
Then Danny suggests that Marty go out with Eugene, and she chases after him. Act I ends with a spirited pledge of friendship (“We Go Together”).
At the High School Hop, everyone is dancing, except Sandy (“Shakin’ At the High School Hop”). She is home feeling sorry for herself (“It’s Raining on Prom Night”). Meanwhile, favorite radio DJ Vince Fontaine, is warming the kids up for the hand-jive dance contest. Kenickie dumps his blind date, Cha-Cha DiGregorio, and pairs up with Rizzo. Danny and Cha-Cha then proceed to win the dance contest (“Born to Hand Jive”).
A few days later at the Burger Palace after school, a couple of the guys run into Frenchy, who flunked out of Rydell and has now dropped out of beauty school (“Beauty School Dropout”). Danny, who has taken up track in order to win back Sandy’s affections, does not know that Cha-Cha’s boyfriend’s gang has challenged the guys to a rumble. He is more concerned about patching things up with Sandy at the Twi-Light Drive-In, but he moves too fast for her, and she leaves (“All Alone at a Drive-In Movie”). A couple of days later, the “greasers” are having a party in Jan’s basement, as Doody and Roger sing “Rock ‘n’ Roll Party Queen.” Sandy wonders what she needs to do to fit in at Rydell (“Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” – Reprise).
The next time Sandy meets up with the Burger Palace Boys and the Pink ladies, she has transformed herself into a greaser’s dream date (“All Choked Up”). Rizzo and Kenickie reunite. All ends happily (“We Go Together” – Reprise).

- SANDY DUMBROWSKI – New girl in town; sweet, wholesome, naive, cute, and innocent.
- BETTY RIZZO – Leader of the Pink Ladies; tough, sarcastic and outspoken but vulnerable.
- FRENCHY – A dreamer; good-natured but not too smart, she is heavily made up, fussy about her appearance, particularly her hair. She can’t wait to finish high school so she can be a beautician.
- MARTY – The ‘beauty’ of the Pink Ladies; pretty and looks older than the other girls, but bretrays her real age when she opens her mouth. She tries to act sophisticated.
- JAN – Funny, loud, compulsive eater and awkward member of the Pink Ladies. Loud and pushy with the girls, but shy with the boys.
- DOODY – The youngest of the guys; small, boyish and open, with a disarming smile and a hero-worshiping attitude towards the other guys. He also plays the guitar.
- KENICKIE – The second in command of the Burger Palace Boys; tough-looking, tattooed, surly and avoids any show of softness. He has an offbeat sense of humor.
- SONNY LaTIERRI – A member of the Burger Palace Boys; funny Italian-American, he is a braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real lady-killer.
- ROGER – The anything-for-a-laugh stocky type of boy; a clown who enjoys winding people up, he is full of mischief and is always dreaming up half-baked schemes and ideas.
- VINCE FONTAINE – A typical ‘teen audience’ disc jockey; slick, egotistical and fast-talking. He is also a veteran ‘Greaser.’
- CHA-CHA, a.k.a. Charlene DiGregorio – The best dancer at St. Bernadette’s; a loud mouth, she wins the dancing competition with Danny.
- EUGENE FLORCZYK – The class valecdictorian; physically awkward, with weak eyes and a high-pitched voice. He’s a typical ‘apple-polisher’ – both smug and pompous, but gullible.
- JOHNNY CASINO – All-American, rock-star “greaser” student at Rydell High, whose real name is Clarence.
- MISS LYNCH – A no-nonsense, serious, loud, English teacher.
- PATTY SIMCOX – A typical cheerleader; attractive, athletic, sure-of-herself, but can be given to bursts of disconcerting enthusiasm. She’s a bit of a pain and unpopular with the Pink Ladies, and can twirl a baton.
- THE PINK LADIES – The club-jacketed, gum-chewing, hip-swinging girls’ gang who hang around with the Burger Palace Boys.
- THE BURGER PALACE BOYS – A super-cool, DA-haired, hard-looking group of high school wheeler-dealers… or so they think.
