Queer Jazz is part of Perth Fringe World 2020 at the Ellington Jazz Club. Jazz singer Jessie Gordon is accompanied by jazz pianist Adrian Galante in a wonderful night featuring jazz favourites and some amazingly obscure numbers that wow the audience.
Gordon is in her element, addressing the audience with interesting facts about the ‘queer’ assignations and relationships of male and female musicians and performers from the 1920s and 1930s. The song choices beautifully suit Gordon’s voice, demonstrating a tone modulation that is captivating, particularly in Lorenz Hart’s Where or When which was a highlight of the show.
The extraordinary Adrian Galante is an outstanding musician whose skill and understanding of nuance is breathtaking! As a pianist, Galante’s control of rhythm and tone is awe-inspiring and he takes the opportunity to shine during the solos within songs, and particularly with his solo of Billy Strayhorn’s Lotus Blossom. Galante pianoforte is matched by his surprisingly lively and expert performance on the clariphone which was another highlight of the show.
Gordon and Galante display a lovely rapport throughout Queer Jazz and performances that are entertaining and brilliant in equal measure.
Queer Jazz is showing until 8th February at the Ellington Jazz Club, Beaufort Street at 8.30pm.
Tickets $31.00 to $36.00
