Egads, it’s the merkin…

It’s a long way from Sunshine to the heady heights of London fashion but Leigh Bowery made the journey – with a little help from Elizabeth I and friends.  Bowery’s designs, like those of Vivienne Westwood, exult in our enduring fascination with the age of the Virgin Queen.  Indeed the Bovver-boy princess and the Dame of all Brixton squats have brought frilled collars, codpieces and that strange proxy of the pubic realm, the merkin, into street parlance again.  So its time to celebrate and examine this contempory fashion obsession.  What is the pull?

Robyn Healy, previously Senior Curator of Fashion & Textiles at the National Gallery of Victoria, and now Fashion Program Director in RMIT’s School of Architecture & Design, takes us into the dark corners of the Elizabethan wardrobe and its trend influence on designers such as Leigh Bowery, Vivienne Westwood and the late Alexander McQueen….she also answers just why Shakespeare’s shoulder pads are here to stay.

About Things on Sunday:

Things on Sunday is a series that speaks to and about a range of cultural concerns in Australia today.  Its style is intimate with a touch of the theatrical.  Its philosophy is art matters.  The series comprises monthly events that bring together commentary and conversation in an always entertaining combination.  These events include audio-visual concerts, speeches and readings, artistic memoirs and the occasional debate.  The subject matter of each event is chosen for its lateral connection to an existing project – in this case, The Malthouse Theatre production of Dario Fo’s satirical masterpiece Elizabeth: Almost by Chance a Woman (3.24 April, Merlyn Theatre)

The most recent Things on Sunday event was a reading last month of Dorothy Porter’s On Passion, by Cate Blanchett.  On June 13 the event will be hosting the Right Hon the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle for Wild Things.
