Mary and Tracy to battle it out for supremacy in the 2010 Green Room Awards.

Hairspray and Mary Poppins have tied with nine nominations each in the 2010 Green Room Nominations. Leading ladies, and newly minted stars, Jaz Flowers (Tracy, Hairpsray) and Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary, Mary Poppins) go head-to-head for Music Theatre Best Female Artist – Leading Role .
Along with Flowers, other Theatre People Pro Choice winners were all nominated: The Drowsy Chaperone’s Geoffrey Rush and Adam Murphy plus Hairspray’s Esther Hannaford.
Other popular Music Theatre nominations will surely include Christie Whelan (Female Artist – Leading Role for Sugar), Todd McKenney (Male Artist – Leading Role for The Boy from Oz) and all the Design nominations for Hairspray.
The most glaring snub is Trevor Ashley not being nominated for his lead role in Hairspray. Also missing are the cast of West Side Story in the Full Ensemble Performance category, Hairspray in Music Direction, and Choreography and Silvie Paladino from The King & I. West Side Story leads Josh Piterman and Julie Goodwin also deserved attention in the nominations.
Kelley Abbey’s nomination for Fame – The Musical choreography is somewhat out of place given the MTV rock clip style used rather than music theatre story-telling choreography.
The Plays category is set to be dominated by MTC’s Richard III, with Ewen Leslie sure to win Best Male Actor for his work as the title character. Opera honours will be split between Bliss and La Sonnambula, with new Australian work Bliss more likely to take Best Production and Emma Matthews sure to win for her stunning turn as Amina in La Sonnambula.
If the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria go overboard with nominations, The Green Room Awards have an over-abundance of categories. The awards ceremony, to be held on 21 March at The Famous Spiegeltent, may be a very long night.
