Things On Sunday - Sweat
Namatjira opened at Malthouse Theatre last week to standing ovations and rave reviews. Bringing the audience to its feet every night, this spellbinding production literally illustrates the extraordinary life of Albert Namatjira.
Incorporating a tour-de-force of storytelling from legendary Indigenous performer Trevor Jamieson, while direct descendants of Namitjira himself create expansive artworks across the stage during each performance. A joyous production that unravels one of Australia’s most compelling and important stories, this exploration of a life fully lived and hugely influential does not end here.
Malthouse Theatre is thrilled to be presenting SWEAT on August 21, a Things on Sunday event that will look at the broader artistic legacy of Namatjira while exploring themes of oral history, family relationships, and how art springs from these fertile grounds.
Albert Namatjira’s granddaughter, Lenie Namatjira, will welcome the audience with a personal account of the life of her grandfather, and how his legacy has influenced her own artistic practice. Lenie will be joined by Judith Ryan, Senior Curator in Indigenous Art at the NGV , who will deliver an illustrated lecture about Albert Namatjira’s art and its lasting resonance. Following Judith’s lecture, renowned indigenous artist Bindi Cole and established indigenous art producer Deb Myers will join Lenie and Judith to discuss how and why they make art, and the restrictions, opportunities, challenges and possibilities that surround indigenous art both in remote communities and urban centers.
Join us for this robust and energetic examination of why art matters.
