After 2009’s critically acclaimed, award-winning production of Sideshow, Octave Theatre is back in 2010 with an exciting new offering, Once on this Island. Welcoming back one of Melbourne’s most exciting young directors, James Cutler, Octave presents yet another little-known gem for Melbourne’s theatre-lovers to enjoy.

Set on a French island of the Antilles, Once On This Island is a vibrant and beautiful story bursting with a rich Caribbean musical score. Ti Moune, a peasant girl orphaned after a terrible storm, is sent by the gods on a remarkable journey of discovery and self-sacrifice to test the power of love against the power of death. In the tradition of theatrical story-telling the small cast presents an array of characters and colourful landscapes, from tropical cyclones to a lavish ball. This unique presentation is brought to life by an ensemble cast who creates the story with song, dance and their own musical instruments.
