Adam Guettel’s masterful collection of songs explores the cyclical nature of our lives in relation to the path of Saturn, suggesting that at our 29th year we have the chance to reflect on our life’s journey thus far and set ourselves on a course for the next stage of our lives.
Guettel uses two seemingly contradictory sources as the foundation for his writing, namely an 18th century hymnal, juxtaposed with the analogies of ancient Greek myths. These two textual influences challenge audiences to leave any religious or secular persuasions aside and rather see the similarities in each perspective, and understand that regardless of personal preference, we are all bound by the same guiding principles and face the same life choices. Myths and Hymns poses many challenges for the performers as Guettel uses difficult theoretical concepts to help convey his underlying intention, but when realised in performance, the colours and intricacies that emerge create a work that is mature and unique.
Myths And Hymns is traditionally presented in concert form, as the work was written as a group of thematically linked songs, rather than possessing a narrative plot or overriding character evolution. In this performance, the work is staged in a more traditional musical theatre style, whereby characters emerge through the songs and relationships are explored between them. When viewing the work, the audience is challenged to look past the text of each individual song, and rather focus on the emotive aspects as presented by the performers.
Myths and Hymns features a talented cast of performers and musicians who play the duel role of providing accompaniment while also being central characters, skillfully woven together by the directing talents of Emily Paterson, the cast features -
Victor Brincat
Natalie Calia
Ryan Leahy
Julie Marr
Stephen McMahon

Come and see an engaging piece of theatre that explores and expands the constructs of what we expect in a standard musical theatre performance.
