Have you ever thought, “Parliament is off with the fairies?”

In Iolanthe Gilbert and Sullivan aim their satirical arrows squarely at the British House of Lords, where peers are a law unto themselves. They are responsible to no one, do not need to do anything clever (assuming they can) and the scope for political favouritism is rampant. Only this year did the Brits announce a proposal to have the members of the House of Lords voted in! Gilbert and Sullivan were there 128 years ago.

As the show unfolds, the problems of Strephon, Phyllis the fairies and the peers are resolved by some delicate legal work, but not before we have a few more jibes at politicians, lawyers and the fairy world itself (with a gentle swipe at Wagner along the way).

Iolanthe sees Diamond Valley Singers and the Eltham Community Orchestra celebrate 25 years of music and singing. As with the previous 24 years, all proceeds go to charity. In a time when thinking globally and acting locally is gaining hold, DVS continues to think and act both globally and locally. Since inception DVS has contributed $115,000 to local and global charities. In 2010, it continues this tradition, committing Iolanthe’s proceeds to both World Vision’s Haiti Earthquake relief appeal and Ivanhoe’s Open House.
