Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc is proud to present CHICAGO – The Musical running from the 4th to 19th November 2011.

Premiering in 1975 and the hit of the 1997 Broadway season in a production that originated at City Center's Encore! series, Chicago won six Tony Awards including Best Revival and later the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year.

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap...until he finds out he's been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess" Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame , fortune and acquittal. This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.

Its a tiny stage in an under-resourced Mechanics Hall in Williamstown - and its the best pro-am production I've seen for years. Erin Cooke and Katie Weston are perfectly cast and perfectly balanced vocally & in acting ability as the two merry murderesses, and I thought they would be hard to beat. They were, but Frieda Lai as Matron Moma Morton (hiding a voice as big as the Western Suburbs)gave the audience yet another reason to cheer their heads off. Musically & Vocally this is an extraordinary cast with no weak links, which means that the work of director Paul Watson - some it quite subtle - simply reinforced the plot while moving the action along with his own interpretation. Loved his more sympathetic view of Amos who in many productions is a figure of fun (nice performance from Stuart Dodge), but the smooth effortless coming together of stunning choreography, fabulous lighting, great acting and character interpretations is a tribute to Paul and his production team. I have not enjoyed myself so much for a very long time and only the sold-out status of the season stopped me moving into the theatre for 2 weeks. Congratulations to everyone.
