American Idiot -Opening Night

Cast of Only Heaven Knows announced
The full cast of Only Heaven Knows was announced on Tuesday, February 28th. Set in the 1940s and 1950s Only Heaven Knows will star Ben Hall (Les Misérables) as Tim, a teenage playwright who leaves his unsupportive family in Melbourne and arrives amidst the bohemian by-way of Kings Cross. Tim and his new found friends must learn to survive hostility in a time before a visible gay community existed. Joining Hall are Matthew Backer (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Blazey Best (Miracle City) and Hayden Tee (Les Misérables). The 30th Anniversary production will play from Friday, May 26th at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre which is around the corner from where the show is set. Fem Belling launches CD
Sunday night (February 26th) saw Fem Belling (NINE the Musical in Concert, CrossXroads) launch her debut CD, NOW THEN at Melbourne’s Stomping Ground Brewery and Beer Hall. Her CD is available to purchase from iTunes and Belling’s facebook page.
HMS PINAFORE– Melbourne Opera
The Melbourne Opera company presents HMS Pinafore starring musical theatre performers Claire Lyons (Anything Goes, Phantom of the Opera) as Josephine and Andrea Creighton (Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music) as Little Buttercup. Ladies in Black opens in Melbourne
Hit musical, Ladies in Black returned to Melbourne this week when they opened at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on Tuesday, February 28th ahead of their three week season there before they move to Canberra’s Theatre Centre. Head to: http://www.ticketmaster.com.
Matilda comes home to Perth
Raised in Perth, Australia, the Perth season of Matilda is a homecoming of sorts for the shows composer and lyricist Tim Minchin. Friday, March 3rd saw the show open at Perth’s Crown Theatre. Matilda to tour NZ in August 2017
Thursday, March 2nd saw Matilda, together with Auckland’s Civic Theatre, announce that the show will be crossing the Tasman Sea in August 2017. The exciting announcement was made via a video of “Matilda” walking along the streets of Auckland and throughout the interior of the Civic Theatre. New Musicals: Evie May: A Tivoli Story
Monday, February 27th saw the beginning of a week long workshop for one the the two shows in development from round two of NMA. With the book written by Hugo Chiarella (Les Misérables), and music and lyrics by Naomi Livingston (Les Misérables, WICKED), Evie May: A Tivoli Story is set in 1966 on the evening of the last ever Tivoli performance, ageing variety star, Evie May recalls the events that lead her from obscurity in outback Western Australia to the bright lights of the Australian variety circuit and the many sacrifices she had to make to get there.
The Production Company launches their 2017 season
On Tuesday, February 28th Melbourne based theatre company The Production Company launched their latest season. Chairman Jeanne Pratt made the announcement of the three shows that will make up the 2017 season. They are:
1. Jerry Herman’s Hello, Dolly! starring Marina Prior (Sound of Music) as Dolly Levi opposite her real life husband Grant Piro (Hairspray) as Horace Vandergelder. Hello, Dolly! Will play at the Arts Centre Playhouse from May 27th to June 11th.
2. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar will play at the State Theatre from July 29th to August 6th. Starring as Jesus in his Production Company debut will be Rob Mills (Ghost, Grease, WICKED), joining Mills are Zoy Frangos (My Fair Lady, Les Misérables) as Judas and Alinta Chidzey (
3. Lerner and Loewe’s Brigadoon which will star Rowan Browne (Singin’ in the Rain) and Genevieve Kingsford (The Light in the Piazza), the legendary Nancye Hayes and Elise McCann (

Sarah Bowden to star as Esmerelda
Australian born and trained musical theatre performer Sarah Bowden (CATS, Cabaret, A Chorus Line) has started rehearsals this week ahead of starring as Esmeralda in Disney’s Der Glöckner von Notre Dame (The Hunchback of Notre Dame). The show opens on April 9th 2017 in Berlin, Germany before transferring to Munich, Germany from November 11th, 2017 until January 7th, 2018. Aussies shine in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
Nine Australians are currently treading the boards aboard the Norwegian Epic cruise ship in the hit musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Leading the group as Bernadette is John James O’Hara (Dusty, Songs for a New World, WICKED) who is joined on stage by Bianca Baykara (CrossXroads, In the Heights) as Cynthia, Xander Ellis (Dream Lover, Ghost) as Frank (and is also the Dance Captain), Andy Johnston (2016 graduate of Victorian College of the Arts) as Felicia, Noni McCallum (Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods) as Diva/ Shirley, Haydan Hawkins (Dogfight, Pirates of Penzance) as Tick, Erin Bruce (Leave it to Diva) as Marion, Jorja Rae Freeman (Dancing with the Stars) and Christoper Page as part of the ensemble. The show opened on Friday, March 3rd. Freeman and Page are also performers in the Burn the Floor show aboard the same ship.
David Harris – Next To Normal
