WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND AUSTRALIAN THEATRES?
The cast of StageArt’s 2018 production of Bare was announced on Thursday, January 4th ahead of their March 20th to April 15th season.
The students are struggling with religion, sexuality and identity. As they rehearse for a production of Romeo and Juliet, parallels are drawn between the play’s star crossed lovers and students Peter (Adam Di Martino) and Jason (Finn Alexander) . While Peter is preparing to come out to his mother, Jason fights to keep their relationship a secret in fear of losing his status as a popular athlete. Jason is also being pursued by Ivy (Hannah McInerney), the beautiful but troubled girl with a bad reputation, much to the dislike of his outspoken sister Nadia (Hannah Grodin).

Grease – The Arena Experience
Christine Anu (Rent, Little Shop of Horrors) will join the cast of Grease – The Arena Experience for the Sydney season of the show which runs from January 19th to 20th for 3 shows only at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney.
Anu, Australia’s most iconic Indigenous entertainer will portray the role of Teen Angel. Joining Anu on stage are Isaiah Firebrace (Eurovision) as Johnny Casino and Beau Ryan (The Footy Show) as Vince Fontaine.

Underground Broadway, Brisbane’s bi- monthly theatre event will start 2018 with a bang with their Summer Edition event. January 22nd will see local juniors and amateur artists perform along side professional musical theatre performers from touring productions of Mamma Mia! and The Rocky Horror Show.

Heralded as The Party of the Year, hit musical Mamma Mia! has arrived in Brisbane! December 28th, 2017 saw the stars gather at the Opening Night at QPAC’s Lyric Theatre.
Set on a Greek island, Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie (Sarah Morrison) who is set to marry Sky (Stephen Mahy) but Sophie who wishes to invite her father to the wedding discovers through her mother’s diary that there are three possibilities.
The story is told using the timeless magic of 22 of ABBA’s tunes.

The Rocky Horror Show
New Years Eve 2017 saw party guests celebrate the opening of The Rocky Horror Show at Adelaide’s newly renovated Festival Theatre.
The 2018 cast is lead by Craig McLachlan as Frank n Furter and plays in Adelaide until January 13th.

Not to be outdone, Melbourne’s State Theatre came alive on New Years Eve 2017 to celebrate the opening of Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Musical. Starring David Campbell as Bobby Darin the show has received standing ovations in every performance and broken box office records at the Arts Centre, Melbourne.
The musical includes some of Bobby Darin’s biggest hits including Mack the Knife, Splish Splash and the titular song Dream Lover.

The Wizard of Oz
The stars of the Sydney entertainment industry had their opportunity to follow the Yellow Brick Road outside the Capitol Theatre on Thursday, January 4th 2018 before audience members packed the stalls ahead of the Sydney opening night of The Wizard of Oz.
Samantha Dodemaide wowed theatre goers as she portrayed the story’s heroine Dorothy in what is her lead role debut in a mainstream musical. Dodemaide shares the stage with some of Australia’s most talented performers including Anthony Warlow, Lucy Durack and Jemma Rix.
Their performance earned the cast a standing ovation.

Australian musical theatre performer Josh Piterman (Beautiful) performed “Advance Australia Fair” at the commencement of the 5th game of the 2017/18 Ashes Series at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday, January 4th, 2018.

Congratulations to Monica Swayne (Fiddler on the Roof) who made her West End debut in the role of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin on December 28th, 2017. Swayne is currently 2nd cover for Jasmine as well as an attendant and ensemble.
March 4th will see Suzie Mathers tread the boards of London’s Hippodrome alongside a star studded line up of West End Musical Theatre performers. The one night only performance will see the cast perform the music of Alexander S. Bermange.
