Australia Day honours
Australia Day saw Sydney Theatre award winner Jimmy Barnes (Working Class Boy) awarded an AO for his service to the performing arts and charity work while entertainer and TV presenter Andrew O’Keefe (Jesus Christ Superstar) and musical theatre performer Anthony Warlow (Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, Annie, Dr Zhivago) were awarded AM’s, O’Keefe for significant service to the broadcast media and charity work and Warlow for significant service to the Performing Arts.
January 2017 has seen the entry into the world and the Australian theatre community of two beautiful baby girls. Billie L. Minns was born on January 16th to Queenie van de Zandt (Follies in Concert, King Kong) and her partner Jonny.
Edie Grace Millicent Bryan was born on January 21st to Lucy Maunder (Heathers, Grease, Dr Zhivago) and Jared Bryan (Reefer Madness, Fiddler on the Roof, Grease).
Both families are doing well!
Final tickets released for Melbourne season of Kinky Boots
If you want to see hit musical Kinky Boots at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre dance in now while tickets are still available! Kinky Boots must leave Melbourne on March 26th. For further information head to: http://kinkybootsthemusical.
Musical Theatre performers sing Australian anthem at international sporting events
This month has been a busy month for Australian musical theatre with numerous awards ceremonies, closing of shows and shows moving city but for some it has been even busier as they have embraced the opportunity to sing the national anthem at some of the big sporting events that our country has hosted.
On January 15th, star of Dusty and The Sound of Music Amy Lehpamer had the honours at this year’s Tour Down Under event in Adelaide.
Most recently, star of Ladies in Black Sarah Morrison was given the honours of singing at the Australian Open Tennis Australia Day celebrations.
January 28th saw Kinky Boots star Toby Francis sing before the women’s final
and the honours tonight will fall to The Book of Mormon’s Bert LaBonte.
Congratulations to all on being great representatives of our theatre community.
Sweet Charity reunion
Sunday, January 22nd saw the original cast and crew of Sweet Charity gather at the Hayes Theatre for their 50th year reunion. In 2014 Sweet Charity played at the Hayes Theatre which is named after Australian theatre great Nancye Hayes. Hayes was given her big break when she portrayed Charity Hope Valentine in the 1967 production of the show which made its Australian premiere on May 6, 1967 at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Melbourne.
Sydney Theatre Award winners
Monday, January 23rd saw the stars of the Sydney theatre community gather at the Seymour Centre for the Sydney Theatre Awards. Little Shop of Horrors led the musical theatre category taking home eight awards including the coveted male and female actor awards won by Brent Hill and Esther Hannaford respectively. The Bodyguard Announcement
This morning saw the announcement of The Bodyguard’s Bodyguard with star of Australian TV Kip Gamblin (Home and Away, All Saints) making his musical theatre debut. Gamblin joins previously announced performers Paulini and Prinnie Stevens. The Bodyguard will begin its tour of Australia on April 21st at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre before moving to Brisbane and Melbourne. For further information head to: http://www.

Australian born theatre performer David Harris (Miss Saigon, WICKED, Legally Blonde) is set to take on the role of Dan in Theaterworks production of Next to Normal. The show will play at Theaterworks in Hartford, Connecticut (USA) from March 23rd to April 30th. Tickets can be purchased from: http://theaterworkshartford.
Suzie Mathers (WICKED, Mamma Mia) who is currently playing the role of Glinda in the West End production of WICKED was honoured with an award for 2017 Young Achiever of the Year at London’s Australia Day celebrations earlier this week. Congratulations Suzie !
Tony and Olivier Award nominated actor Tony Sheldon (Man of La Mancha, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, The Producers) will play Collignon/ Dufayel in the Broadway bound production of Amelie.
