Christmas around the country
It is the time of year when everyone is hosting carols events and many feature members of the Australian musical theatre community.
Congratulations to all the nominees in the 2017 GLUG Awards. The GLUGS are a Sydney based group of theatre lovers; critics, journalists, actors and theatregoers who since 1966 have met for lunch once a month. The award ceremony will be held on Monday, February 5th in Sydney.

In the Heights
Sunday, December 10th saw the cast announced for Blue Saint Productions season of In the Heights. In the Heights begins previews on March 16th, 2018 at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre with the season running through to Sunday, April 8th.
Protagonist Usnavi will be portrayed by Ryan Gonzalez (Kinky Boots), Benny by Tim “Timomatic” Omaji (So You Think You Can Dance), Vanessa by Olivia Vasquez (The Bodyguard), Nina by Luisa Scrofani (Violet), Sonny by Marty Alix (Company), Daniela by Monique Montez (Dusty), Carla by Libby Asciak (Heathers), Kevin by Alexander Palacio (La Sala), Camila by Ana Maria Belo (Fawlty Towers), Abuela Claudia by Margi De Ferranti (Ruthless), Piragua Guy by Richard Valdez (Latino Singer), Graffiti Pete by Stephen Tannos (FAME), Male Ensemble/DC by William Centurion (Aladdin), Female Ensemble by Michelle Rozario (The King and I) and Samantha Bruzzese (In the Heights).

Congratulations to the four boys who have been cast in the role of Young Bobby Darin. Oscar Mulcahy (Kinky Boots), Amon Prete (Professional Debut), Hudson Sharp (Matilda) and Lachlan Young (Kinky Boots) will alternate the role over 8 shows a week for the show’s run at Melbourne’s Arts Centre.
The View Upstairs
Invisible Wall Productions and Sugary Rum Productions together with Hayes Theatre Company present to you the cast of the Australian Premiere of Off-Broadway musical The View Upstairs.
Wes, a young inspiring fashion designer will be played by Henry Brett (The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee). When Wes purchases an old building in his hometown with the intention of converting it into a store he is transported back to when the space was was used as a gay bar full of colourful folk. Markesha McCoy (Rock of Ages – Los Vegas) as Henri the lesbian owner, Madison McKoy (Miss Saigon) as Willie the flamboyant queen of a certain age, Stephen Madsen (Muriel’s Wedding) as Wes’ love interest Patrick, Ryan Gonzalez (Kinky Boots) as Freddie, a Latino drag queen, Martella Hammer (Blue Heelers) as Freddie’s mum Inez and David Hooley (Fiddler on the Roof) as Dale. Further cast will be announced at a later date.

Funny Girl – The Musical in Concert
Funny Girl, the semi biographical story of the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedian Fanny Brice is coming to the Sydney Opera House from July 12-14, 2018.
Funny Girl – The Musical plays for three shows only and stars Michala Banas (Winners and Losers), Casey Donovan (We Will Rock You), Virginia Gay (Calamity Jane), Verity Hunt-Ballard (Mary Poppins), Dami Im (Grease), Zahra Newman (The Book of Mormon), Caroline O’Connor (Anastasia), Queenie van de Zandt (BLUE), Megan Washington (Australian musician), Trevor Ashley (Les Miserables), Nancye Hayes (Brigadoon) and Don Hany (EastWest 101).

Lucy Durack, Amanda Harrison, Helen Dallimore and Jemma Rix will take centre stage at Joondalup Resort for the city of Joondalup’s annual Valentine’s Concert. Joining the stars of WICKED on stage will be Simon Gleeson (Les Miserables) and the WA Symphony Orchestra.

Rehearsals are underway for Darlinghurst Heights. Set in the 20s and 30s the show captures the time when Kings Cross was the only place in Sydney where a person could live anonymously, where bohemian lifestyles were accepted and even encouraged. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first Australian production it is apt that the show plays at the Hayes Theatre, in the heartland of story’s setting.
Rehearsals are in full swing for the Melbourne season of Dream Lover. David Campbell and Hannah Fredericksen return to the lead roles of Bobby Darrin and Sandra Dee in the story about legendary singer, songwriter and actor, Bobby Darrin.

Marika Aubrey (Matilda) made her Broadway debut this week when she performed at Gypsy of the Year. The Gypsy of the Year annual competition celebrates 6 weeks of fundraising work of 56 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national tour companies.
This years event raised $5,609,211.00 for Broadway Cares.
