Wonthaggi Theatrical Group
Congratulations to Wonthaggi Theatrical Group who have just finished their season of Oliver. The production elements of this show easily rivaled, if not surpassed, those of the bigger Melbourne companies. Sets, costumes, lighting, sound, direction, choreography and musical direction were stunning. It's so refreshing to see a small community sell out their 12-show run and get the area excited about the arts. But the best thing is that no-one involved with the group is paid for their contribution!
Six years ago, Wonthaggi struggled to cast a 6-person show and looked like they would fold. Last year, the production team auditioned over 150 people. Karen Milkins-Hendry, Tad Hendry and Kirk Skinner have been the driving forces behind the group, building up to what it has become today. They were presented with life membership after the final performance and were honoured to be part of a group that brings the community together year after year.
If you get the chance, make the drive and see a regional show. I can't wait to see what Wonthaggi do with Cabaret next year. With Colin Mitchell behind design and direction, and Carmel Slater taking on the musical direction, it is sure to be another highly successful production and no doubt, a sell-out season.
