Without VCA or WAAPA etc?

What are other ways of getting jobs as a performer in commercial musical theatre without the obvious VCA/WAAPA pathway? The Australian theatre industry is small enough already and even then there are not enough parts for everyone! Which other pathways did you take or will you take? Why did you avoid the others? Should you risk it all for a degree in Musical Theatre or get another, non-performing degree + job whilst training on the side with workshops and classes? Would the latter decrease the chance of getting cast in commercial theatre productions? Thanks, Jen

It is possible

As the Seussical song says . . . "anything's possible".
A recognized perfoming degree / cert is definitely a benefit but there are many successful artists, even academy award winners who have not had all the formal training you might expect. Some haven't had any at all. They've learned the craft as they go - on the job.
Some have been in the right place at the right time, others have studied and studied and studied.
What have I done? Let's see, about 19 years classical voice training, a NIDA summer course cert and about 2 years tap and a workshop or two, over the years.
I've managed to do quite a lot of pro work (some stage, some recording and lots of cabaret) but I also enjoy doing amateur productions too which have been of professional standard but without the professional $$.
Get yourself an agent who handles theatre (not TV extras and if the agent wants a payment 'up front', do NOT join them) and there is no doubt will be put forward for 'big' shows.
