Trevor Ashley in Hairspray

Has anyone seen Trevor Ashley NOT break character and start laughing in the reprise of "Timeless to Me?"

It happened on opening night, and again last night, and I haven't heard of anyone who hasn't seen it happen.

In fact, most people I talk to who've seen the show say something like "Oh, it was hilarious! Edna cracked up during her song with Wilbur and they both started laughing. It was SOOOO funny!"

And the audience DO love it -- the first time. I'm starting to getting cynical about it now.

...

It's staged. It happened in

It's staged. It happened in London in the same spot.

So it's directorial AND it came across the Indian Ocean?!

Well, that sucks.

Cheers,

Yep has happened in the same

Yep has happened in the same place every time I have seen it. Sure it's staged, but the audience do love it and they feel they have been a part of something "special" (seeing actors being "real people")...

Timeless schtick

Marc Shaiman based the song on Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé's duets from the 60's. They often incorporated "corpsing" into their routines (even on Broadway in "Golden Rainbow"). So I guess it's
an acceptable flourish.

Re:

It's the same as when the phone keeps ringing after Edna picks it up. Staged 'mistake' and happens in every show. But people love it!

Those of you who saw the

Those of you who saw the original Hot Shoe Shuffle may remember David Atkins and Rhonda Burchmore corpsing throughout the show. Mr Atkins clearly loves it. I reckon it's cheap when it becomes a regular "rehearsed" thing. I agree Ian, it sucks.

I went and saw Hairspray last

I went and saw Hairspray last night, and we had all the same 'moments' that are talked about. Having had experience in theatre, the phone call over-ringing did seem rather odd that it happened (being professional theatre) and even the break in characters during the Edna and husband dancing scene....even though I now realise it's a staged thing, it's still cute...however one can ask if it breaks away from the performance???
