PHANTOM SET TO BECOME THE NEXT LES MIS
Submitted by Anonymous on Sunday, 9th Sep 2012
It's about to happen again; like Les Miserables before it, Phanton of the Opera is set to be flogged within an inch of it's life by most of the companies around Melbourne (CLOC, Windmill and Babirra hae already announced their productions)
...

Don't forget Hairspray as
Don't forget Hairspray as well!

And I am aware of a couple of other companies already confirmed that havent announced.
Hopefully not production #9 or 10
Gosh, I recall the first year Les Mis was available to the amateur world - what was it? NINE productions in the one year? Eeeewww Can that be beaten? I certainly hope NOT!!!
RE: Many Phantoms
Why is anyone shocked, I think it's great. I'd rather hear about a mllion productions of Phantom than one single person whinge she didn't get Christine because it was precast. Something I don't think really happens, but we hear because someone may be slightly bitter that they didn't get the lead in a small lead numbers show. PLUS with so many productions I look forward to the variety of new faces and voices that have never been a lead hit the stage. Production teams will work hard to show respect at audition time to gain a full cast for each version of the show, and this will help community theatre become more community less ego I think. Who knows we may even see community theatre ticket prices find their true place back under $30 to fill the theatres of a show people can see anywhere. There are so many positives about multiple productions of the same show if people really think about it. Not everything is a negative :)
PEACE OUT!

I know through talking with companies who are booked to preform Phantom that the rights aren't just being handed out to any old company - and that in terms of areas/locations they are being very particular about it too.
Phantom, Ticket Prices, etc
Sorry JC - gone are the days when ticket prices will get back below $30. For something like Phantom, they (the rights holders) require ticket prices to be high in your application, because they have to assess what income they will derive.
Be that as it may, the cost of putting on a show is quite prohibitive. Depending on the theatre, the set and the fixed costs such as rehearsal venue, pianists, librettos, orchestra, etc, an amateur theatre production can cost between $50k and $120k (or more)to put on. It is not simply a case of dropping the price and putting on more shows - companies are sandwiched into restricted time envelopes in theatres, because other companies want to show their wares too. And cast members are not typically up to doing more than a 2-3 week season. They are not professionals and have a life to lead.
I think in the next 5 years, most ticket prices will be north of $40 just so companies can break even. It is a catch 22 scenario, unfortunately. I have an idea!! Let's blame the Carbon Tax!
In reference to Steve's comment, that is what I have heard too. Applicants have to make a case, because the rights holders want to get their share of profits, which they wont if there are too many productions for the audience base.
Well Said.
