Makeup?
Submitted by Ashley Weidner on Thursday, 16th Jun 2011
As a guy, I haven't worn makeup on stage in about 6 years. Do guys wear makeup anymore? If so what's good to buy?
I have ill-defined cheekbones and a jawline that needs pronunciation. Any suggestions?

Makeup - YES
It doesn't matter on the sex of the actor on stage but if you dont wear makeup, you will certainly stand out as the only pastey faced person on stage.
To save on the skin damage, I prefer to use water based makeup e.g. AQUACOLOR is a good brand and easily available at lots of costume shops and theatrical outlets. It is a great cover and comes in a compact plastic case. Some people prefer the grease sticks for face cover but sadly they mean almost a mandatory 'break-out' after production week.
You can get great 'skinny' grease sticks like 'grey' and 'crimson lake' for aging but for some of us, that is sadly occuring without the aid of makeup!
One very important thing though - All theatre makeup or theatre 'style' makeup has the same consistency of polyfiller so remember to clean it off thoroughly and indulge your skin with a little bit of moisturiser as soon as you can after the show.
Mr Weidner you need to buy
Mr Weidner you need to buy yourself some bronzer stat! At the very least you need cheekbones and a jaw...
Aqua colour definitely is good, and if you're looking for a cheap alternative - go to kmart and hit the Face of Australia stand in the makeup section. Their panstick (looks like foundation in a giant lipstick tube) is great as a basic stage base. Chuck on a bit of translucent powder and some bronzer and you're good to go. Avoid eyeliner unless you know what you're doing, same for lipstick, and for god's sake don't rub the foundation into your eyebrows - I see guys on stage all the time who've done this and it just looks goddamn weird!
we can discuss false eyelashes at a later date...
I must admit..
I didn't wear makeup for the last show I was in. Admittedly, I was only onstage for 15 seconds initially!
A MUST!
I can't put enough of the stuff on!
Never really did understand the saying "Everything in moderation" when it came to smothering my face with bronzing delights!
Cheers
Thanks for your input. I am still undecided as to the makeup issue. Those of you who have access to my latest profile picture on facey will see I am not entirely adverse to it. Maybe I will get some of the stuff Ang suggested, as it has clear concise and easy to follow instructions.
I'm still not sold, but if wearing heaps of it means I will look as good as Rostron, then maybe it will be worth it....
I used to have a heap of the stuff until my kit got stolen. I got definite makeup game, learned from the best, I had heard that it wasn't so neccesary for guys anymore due to advances in lighting. I am not scared of eyeliner, bring it on!
False eyelashes... Let's talk!
