How do you go about writing your own Cabaret?

What's the difference between sitting at a piano and ripping out a collection of your favourite pop songs, and a legitimate "cabaret"? Is a cabaret essentially just a song cycle with dialogue or is it something more? What makes the artform so personal and special (and so often seductive)?
