HAIRSPRAY, Ballarat Lyric Theatre, August 3-12

Ballarat Lyric Theatre is "back in town' with an innovative interpretation of HAIRSPRAY that is again of the high standard for which they are renowned. David Harford's direction, choreography and design are fabulous as is Andy McCalman's musical and choral direction. Quirky projected cartoons by Tohm Curtis make a distinct difference to the set and add to the 'cartoon treatment' approach to the show. Casting is incredible. Worth the trip to Ballarat. Have just seen PLOS' HAIRSPRAY as well...great show. Go to Frankston this week and do the comparison at Ballarat next week! Mike Whitehead

Cartoon?

An interesting take on the show, it seemed. I'm not sure whether the public would deem it to have been given the 'cartoon treatment' - somewhat more like the 'Microsoft Paint' treatment... A very, very tight orchestra, however - if a bit on the loud side.

Outstanding Performance!

I completely disagree with your comment. The cartoon design, and the design of the whole show was sensational!
Definitely the best amateur production of the year, there was a reason why the WHOLE audience not only stood to applaud, but danced through the finale of the show. I also saw the Frankston production earlier this year, which was fantastic in its design, yet lacked the heart and amazing energy of this cast, which were absolutely AMAZING, and of a professional standard. I encourage anyone to get to this show why it still lasts, definitely worth the drive from anywhere!

I completely AGREE with

I completely AGREE with you!
Yes the sound of the show was incredible - the band and the chorus were tight and the best aspect of this show.
But the cartoon projections were completely distracting and excessive, stylistically inconsistent and basically unnecessary. It'll never be the epic screen set of the Australian tour production.
I did find myself really immersed in the production though, especially by act 2 I was really rooting for those guys on stage. The ensemble especially need to be congratulated for their hard work on ALL THAT CHOREOGRAPHY! A lot of them were untrained dancers but they have obviously worked extremely hard to make it all look effortless. That said, I think the choreography was also in excess, there were moments when I just wanted the dancers to stop so I could focus on the story.

I have to disagree with that

I have to disagree with that comment, i thought the 'cartoon' design, and the design of the show as a whole was sensational!! definitely the best amateur production of the year. I also saw the frankston production, which was also great, yet lacked the heart and energy that this cast had, what an AMAZING cast of a professional standard! I encourage anyone to get to this show why it still lasts.

Dear Anonymous

I am sure that EVERY amatuer production of Hairspray will have the audience up dancing at the end - it's that kind of show and the music just gets you going! It happened at PLOS to - every performance! And anyone who has worked on the show knows how much energy has to go in to it - I cannot see how you can say PLOS' Hairspray lacked heart and energy - there are numerous comments in the FAC visitors book that disagree with you. I'm all for bigging up your own production - but don't put another one down along the way.

Great Production

I was the MD for Ballarat Lyric Theatre's production of Hairspray and also found the time throughout our season to drop in and see PLOS' production of Hairspray which was energised, clever and full of great talent. The orchestra was sensational and PLOS deserve every great accolade they can - go PLOS you guys ROCKED!!! I understand people have preferences however I take my hat off to PLOS - a great amateur performance!!!!
