Hairspray Auditions

Chris Hughes's picture

Hi,
I'm just wondering if you have any information about the Hairspray production coming to Australia.

The auditions are supposedly next month and are an open call, which would suggest you don't require and agent to audition.

Do you know any more specific information, or perhaps direct me to somewhere that does.

Thanks,
Melissa

Agents have already submitted

Agents have already submitted their talent for consideration to the casting agent. There is talk of an open call but who can be sure. . .

Agents

Hey, Im 14 and I go to a place called CPCA which stands for Childrens Performing Company of Australia and I would really love a agent so I could audition for lots of musicals because its my dream to be in one. Does anyone know of any good agents if so could you please let me know, Thank You.

Article on Theatre People

Not sure if you have seen it already, but Simon Parris wrote a very good article for Theatre People recently:

those submissions were for agent auditions - not open calls.

There probably aren't going

There probably aren't going to be open calls.
They've had over 2,000 submissions, which is the most ANY show has ever had in Australia.
They won't have time to do open calls, unfortunately.

Bad luck to those who don't have agents :(

There are OPEN auditions

TRACY WHERE ARE YOU?
HAIRSPRAY OPEN CALL AUDITIONS COMMENCE AROUND AUSTRALIA ON APRIL 20 AND THE SEARCH FOR TRACY TURNBLAD BEGINS……
The global award winning production of HAIRSPRAY The Musical, directed by David Atkins and choreographed by Jason Coleman, opens on October 2 at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne and tickets will go on sale at Ticketek.com.au on Monday 17 May.
On Tuesday 20 April, the producers and creative team of Hairspray will embark on a national tour of Australia to commence what is arguably the most grueling search for a major musical theatre role ever undertaken in Australia.
Open call auditions for the role of Tracy Turnblad and other roles (see casting brief below) will take place in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

If you think you have got what it takes to be Australia’s own Tracy Turnblad then you will be 5'3" or shorter, 17yrs – 25years old and you must be heavyset. Outgoing, unstoppable, goodhearted with a vibrant, lovable, spirited personality and loves to sing and dance.

HAIRSPRAY OPEN CALL AUDITIONS FOR THE ROLE OF TRACY AND OTHER HAIRSPRAY ROLES (SEE CASTING BRIEF BELOW) WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE BELOW DATES, TIMES AND LOCATIONS.

Tracy

Do you really have to be 5'3" or shorter or is that just a estimate?

Of course I am doing my deb

Of course I am doing my deb on the melb audtitions

melbourne hairspray auditions

melbourne audition is actually SUNDAY 9th MAY at 9am...not the 1st. hopefully you will be able to audition still! i'm 5'6 and am going to give it a go!

see www.hairspraythemusical.com.au

Other parts...

I was planning on trying out in the Melbourne audition on the 9th, but upon further investigation I realised they're only looking for the 6 leads...and the only role I could go for (because i'm not 'African American') would be Tracy, but i'm taller than 5"3 and i'm not 'heavy set'...Am I right in saying this? Can I audition for ensemble/chorus roles? Or are these auditions JUST for leads??

Age...

I really wanto audition for tracy turnblad but i'm not 17 yet, i'm short and heavyset... but not old enough... I just turned 16 on march 28th this year
would i still have a chance??

Does anyone know how

Does anyone know how difficult the routine will be for those who have auditions?? Any feedback would be great !

Commitment and production time

1) Does anyone know what is involved for those that are successful in gaining a role in Hairspray, i.e...Is it a Full time committment? And
2) How long do rehersals and the production run for i.e four months?
Thanks Guys
All the best for the audition
