Glossary of terms for young, and new performers

Ashley Weidner's picture

When I first started out in theatre, I remember being overwhelmed by the specific terms used by people. As an example, I didn't go to my first Sitzprobe because noone told be what it was, and I was a little worried about what it may be.

So what are your terms that you think every upcoming prospective performer should know? They might be simple ones (OP, P, upstage), or they might be thing that are more specific, and that they dont teach you in drama school ;)

Keep it nice, but hit me with them. They will be published on the site eventually, so that no one is confused ever again!

One suggestion...

Here are a few more:

'The stage is live' - doesnt mean it will electrocute you...
Libs = nothing to do with politics and finally;
penultimate party - not as rude as it sounds(depending on the people/theatre company of course!)

Enjoy finding out what these actually mean!

LX Bar...

LX Bar.. Still have no freakin idea what that means. I assume L is for lighting... but the X?

LX is short for Electrics. In

LX is short for Electrics. In the same way Dick is short for Richard.

A LX Bar is just a bar to hang lighting off. You can have many LX bars EG: LX1, LX2, LX2A, LX3, LX3A, LX4 plus FOH1 and FOH2 are the stranded Lighting bars at FAC.

LX can also refer to the Department or a cue.
In a stage manager script, lighting cues syntax is LX 0000 (00 where the cue number would be.

Trucks

When I first heard the phrase "...the trucks will come on from side stage", I actually thought they were referring to 'trucks' as in large vehicles and wondered (1) how on earth they would fit in the wings and (2) why the hell did we need trucks in Bye Bye Birdie?

Cans

I remember the first time a techie asked me if I wanted 'cans'... I thought the orchestra was getting free beers!

I always thought 'cans' was referring to something else entirely...

I heard a great story once

I heard a great story once about a director telling her cast member to "Strike the chair"...

...unfortunately, the cast member hit the chair thinking the director wanted this. She really wanted the actor to take the chair off stage with her.
