A Convenient Guild?

Chris Hughes's picture

Hello Everyone,

I'd really like to see the guilds held in a city theatre. Sure, you'd have to go without canapes afterwards, as they'd have to hire a theatre, but surely it would be more convenient for the patrons. It's easier to get hotels, cabs, after party venues and it's a more central location for everyone.

What do you think?

City Guilds??

Absolutely and totally - YES YES YES!!!!

Totally agree - or even

Totally agree - or even somewhere much closer to the city, how about The National?! Plenty of options for food/drinks before and after, and if the bar was actually open before and after the awards, there would still be a nice vibe in the foyer before/after for people to mingle.

I don't mind the Guilds being

I don't mind the Guilds being in the outer burbs. Think of how many theatre companies there are in the suburbs! So much easier to find somewhere to park.

Parking?

What about the arts centre, the comedy theatre, her maj, the regent, the princess, the ath? All have ample parking...

True, parking 'out' of the

True, parking 'out' of the city is heaps easier and cheaper!

Yes but...

The city has MUCH easier access to public transport.

I completely agree. I enjoy

I completely agree. I enjoy the road trips out of town, but if it's going to be in Melbourne, have it in the city. more convenient, more fun, safer, and close proximity to late night kebabs.

her's an idea - lets have it

her's an idea - lets have it at the Ath, shut down Collins Street and everyone can arrive in a limo and we can have a red carpet ceremony.

I see helicopters, news vans, police, security, terror threats!

AMAZING!

Petition?

Is there enough support out there to warrant creating a petition for a city based awards? If we get 20 responses for this from registered users, then it would be something we'd look at for sure. Respond to this comment if you'd like to see the awards hit the city one year...

here here

Melbourne is always a good place to do stuff.

I like the idea. Let's face

I like the idea. Let's face it- Yarra Valley's theatre (and canteen) just didn't do justice to the fashions in the foyer in 2010! Having the Guilds in a city theatre would also take the awards off anyone's "turf", removing the sense of entitlement I that I think tends to build up amongst companies or performers who perform close to the awards venue.
The Guilds already asks us to dress Black Tie, and the night is always keenly attended- why not top it off by having it at a decent theatre?

YES!

I would love to have the guilds in the city! Much more exciting!! :)

Yes, but only if it doesn't

Yes, but only if it doesn't raise the ticket price!

canapes

It wouldn't raise the ticket price if they ditched the canapes. That kind of catering costs a small fortune. I think most people are happy to have dinner before they come!

Silver Anniversary

2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the Guild Awards - what better excuse for a big celebration in a 'real' Melbourne theatre?

It's easier for younger

It's easier for younger people to be involved in theatre if it's not inside the city as their parents are more likely to take them to places that are closer.

Yes, because so many people

Yes, because so many people live closer to Yarra Valley or Frankston than... Melbourne... oh wait a minute! :p Absolutely, this would be a great idea for the 25th anniversary Guilds - I'd be more than willing to sign a petition.
