Community theatre outside Melbourne
Submitted by Tim McDonald on Saturday, 6th Mar 2010
Last year I was lucky enough to do a show in the United States, in Utah of all places. It was an amazing experience and while community theatre is community theatre wherever you go, it was also very different to the way we do it here. No-one has ever heard of bump out for instance; they just set up and pack up, there is no P-side and OP-side; its just stage right and stage left, and cast actually got 6 free tickets to give to family and friends; and tickets were super cheap! So it got me thinking, what do other places do for theatre and how is it different to Melbourne? I'd love to hear what goes on around the world (and the country) when other people put on community theatre!

Sydney Theatre is Interesting
Ok.. so I may be a little biased.
Having just moved to Sydney from Melbourne again, it is very interesting to compare the so called non pro scene here.
It's all town halls, RSL stage rooms etc especially in the metro area. It seems that whilst the universities have lecture halls and the like they are not as open to the public hiring these, though a case in point in Melbourne are the situations that faced Whitehorse sometime ago and now CLOC with the Alex.
It's an interesting thought knowing how cultural Melbourne is with this move by the unis.... what happened, others filled in.. There are just aren't the independant venues in Sydney.
However you then get some regionals, say Gosford Musical Society who have access to the council run Laycock Street Theatre.. not big enough but it's a theatre.
The quality here in Sydney from a talent perspective is certainly there, it's just let down technically and in physical venue quality.
In my opion Melbourne you are spoilt and really it shouldn't be any other way, but I am biased. It's just amazing to see how lucky Melbourne theatrepeople are. It's certainly not the norm.
