Asphyxiating on the fumes...

So much Hairspray...will the ozone layer survive.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I see so far for 2012:

- SLAMS
- PLOS
- Geelong
- Ballarat

and a possible but unconfirmed rumour of Catchment as well.

It may be just me but this seems to take all the excitement out of the show now, even though they are all at opposite ends of the earth.

Thoughts?

...

Such an overrated show...

Casting

I am intrigued to see how all these companies go box office wise with this show, as it wasn't too long ago that so many of us saw the professional version, and of course not to mention the specific casting required for Hairspray.

I am definately looking forward to seeing these productions though and hope they all have excellent seasons!

Re: Casting

Agreed. I'm worried about how they're all going to cast them, too...

Re: Re: Casting

I'm with you on that one Ian.

But hey, Directors are creative people. I doubt that any company would have chosen this show without considering that challenge. I'm excited to see the results.

Hardly out done

I remember one year when there were NINE productions of Les Mis !

Yeah, will definitely be

Yeah, will definitely be interesting to see how the casting pans out. I don't think the multiple productions are a problem though, Frankston, Geelong and Ballarat are far enough away from Melbourne that they may as well be different "worlds" when it comes to people willing to travel to get involved. When a few more Melbourne announcements pop up, then we may have overload... cough Spring Awakening cough

Yup

Brigid beat me to it. Remember the "Les Mis-A-Thon" around about 2000? I think there were more companies doing Les Mis than NOT doing it!

I wonder how people will feel about the inevidible white-black casting that will happen with Hairspray. I know some people get really testy about race in shows (coughmisssaigoncough) but I'm sure the companies can do something creative costume-wise to tell the story in a slightly more abstract way. Can't wait to see what they come up with!

I think all companies should

I think all companies should hand the rights back..

And another

Add Catchment to the list: http://theatrepeople.com.au/newsflash/catchment-lines-2012-vic

Welcome to the 60's

OK so I've always wanted to play Edna... now here's my chance...several times over...I mean, what other shows have a leading man who's chubby and can dance?

I do believe that we wil see some great work....but do we really have to have an overdose of 60's kitsch?

dark actors

Melbourne is incredibly multicultural. Go out and find the multi-racial cast. And watch out for an all black/dark show from All That Glitters Production Company in 2012.

Roll Call!

It's my dream to play Noreen and Doreen as a two - headed conjoined twin.

Yes Melbourne is

Yes Melbourne is multicultural...But how do you expect all these non-caucasian performers to show up for this ONE show (and maybe Miss Saigon) when they never really get to do musical theatre in general to start with? Companies please ask yourselves how many times have you put on shows with all-white cast AND crew.
It's irony to see you people are no different from the "Corny Collins Show" to start with.'
I hope none of you would end up with caucasian kids in the "coloured" roles...

I think the musical repertoire should move towards a more flexible direction. Art should be representative of reality and human behaviour. Real world doesn't come in one colour.
