AUSTRALIAN CHILDREN’S THEATRE COMPANY FINDS THE RIGHT ‘BALANCE’

A balanced education system is one that provides children with a curriculum that not only meets a child’s academic and intellectual needs, but also allows for and encourages personal, social and emotional development. The performing arts play an important role in continuing this education process beyond the classroom.

To that end, Internationally acclaimed Australian children’s theatre company, Acting Antics, has developed a written curriculum with performance-based outcomes for children aged 4-12 years in Musical Drama, Performance Drama and Musical Theatre that takes place outside school hours as well holiday programs that give children aged 7-12 years the opportunity to audition, rehearse and perform in fully costumed plays or musicals every holidays. Acting Antics one-day holiday programs, “Sing Your Heart Out”, “Dance Your Socks Off” and “Cheerleading” are also offered at selected venues in Melbourne.

Acting Antics is not just concerned with the process but with the final product - the learning process must have a final outcome. Goals need to be set and achieved. When a positive outcome is achieved under pressure (the performance), the excitement and exhilaration experienced is a joy for all involved.

Acting Antics holiday and end of year productions offer students the opportunity to perform live, in costume, up to 6 times a year. Small classes and specifically written scripts ensure that every child gets a meaningful role with dialogue – there are no trees or rocks at Acting Antics! To compliment the curriculum all students receive level appropriate workbooks, book bags and uniforms and, to the relief of parents, all costumes are supplied by Acting Antics. Acting Antics offer the following after school programs:

Musical Drama: ACT I (4-5yrs)
Through fun, singing, movement, story telling, dramatic play and role playing, students improve motor skills, language skills, co-ordination, creativity, socialization skills and confidence.

Performance Drama: ACT II (6-8yrs) & ACT III (9-11yrs)
These classes nurture, challenge and empower students to explore their creative and dramatic potential while developing a love and appreciation of the theatre as an art form. Curriculum covers sensory awareness, movement & mine, the actor’s voice, improvisation skills, characterisation, stagecraft, the audition process and public speaking. During the year students participate in Skits & Sketches, Reader’s Theatre and a fully costumed end of year play.

Musical Theatre: ACT II (6-8yrs) & ACT III (9-11yrs)
This exciting program introduces students to the fabulous world of Musical Theatre while offering basic vocal training and Broadway style theatrical dance. Acting and performance skills are an integral part of this program as students must be able to communicate what they are singing about in an expressive convincing manner. The ability to multi-task under pressure, such as singing, dancing & acting in front of an audience, is an essential life skill offered by these classes.

Although Australian based, Acting Antics has gained extensive and invaluable experience running their programs in International Schools in Singapore and Hong Kong and of course they have a loyal following in New Zealand.

Acting Antics runs reguar holiday programs at St Margaret’s School Berwick.
