Boxman - Moving Parts 2013

TP Rating:
5
Venue:
Gasworks Theatre

On Friday night I saw “Boxman,” a widely-travelled and much-acclaimed show.  Written by popular writer Daniel Keene and performed by Terry Yeboah, it is directed by Matt Scholten.  It takes the story of one man, Ringo, whose life story is horrific.  His attempts to cling to some good cheer from his past, live a functional life and somehow keep together his sanity, make for an intensely engaging and involving show.

Who Saved JFK?

TP Rating:
3
Venue:
Chapel Off Chapel

When a celebrity dies, no matter the circumstances, there is always a lot of interest, coverage, and theories surrounding their death. The subject is often picked over with a fine tooth comb, witnesses interviewed, stories investigated and finally, books written. Their death becomes mythologised, the truth resting uneasily somewhere at the bottom of all the content.

Beached

TP Rating:
4
Venue:
MTC Theatre Lawler Studio

The topicality of a play about a morbidly obese son and his feeding mother is quite ripe considering this year’s Biggest Loser theme (on Channel Ten) with the highly advertised Big Kev and his mum. Just as Kev’s mother seems to defend him blindly and ‘protect’ him to his own detriment, so does Beached’s JoJo hover over her Arty as he wiggles cheerily and permanently from his straining sofa.

As an aspiring actress, getting the opportunity to see Kat Stewart live caused me to experience an unprecedented level of pre-show excitement. Seeing her perform in such a candid and accessible way last Saturday at The Famous Spiegeltent, was even better. Having surprisingly never been inside the iconic venue, I was unsurprisingly dazzled by the extravagance and sense of carnival that it evoked. I was intrigued and visually stimulated all at the same time. I remember thinking, this will be fun.

While less than stellar lead singers take the tarnish off this glittering jewel of a production, tremendous choral and orchestral work create welcome highlights.
