Confession time. At the age of 22, I’m still yet to receive my driver’s license and to many, this is no big deal. To others, it just seems lazy. Nonetheless, I couldn’t help but feel a certain irony wafting over me as I lined up to see Mockingbird Theatre’s take on Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize winning play How I Learned to Drive.

Mockingbird Theatre launched with the highly regarded The Laramie Project at Chapel off Chapel last year, their critically acclaimed season of Blue/Orange has just completed, and their latest project, the Pulitzer Prize winning How I Learned To Drive by Paula Vogel, opens May 3.

Who's mad and who's sane?

As the first play of their inaugural season (following a taster production of The Laramie Project last year), director Chris Baldock has chosen Australian-born, British playwright Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange to launch his Mockingbird Theatre. This stark comedy focuses on the dangers of mental health assessment and racism within the healthcare industry, relying upon strong performances from its three actors and getting them in this intelligent production.

Lord of the Rings actor Richard Edge joins VCA graduate and MTC actor Kane Felsinger, and TV's Flat Whites actor Christian Heath in Joe Penhall's multi award winning hit comedy/drama Blue/Orange presented by highly lauded Melbourne based company Mockingbird Theatre.

Laramie, Wyoming – Like No Place On Earth. In October 1998 Matthew Shepard was murdered. He was the victim of a hate crime in which he was brutally beaten and left for dead because of his sexuality. Four weeks later, nine members of the Tectonic Theatre Project travelled to Laramie and began a project that what would ultimately consume two years of their lives. With over two hundred interviews, a court case that had the attention of the world and scores of different characters, The Laramie Project was born.
