“All the world’s a stage”, is the most famous line from the play, but little did Shakespeare know as he wrote it that director Eamon Flack would take it as a stage direction, setting the first act of As You Like It in the ‘world,’ as it were – namely, the stairs and seats of the house - the actors roaming about the slightly bewildered audience who were presumably wondering why the thespians weren’t using the plentiful space on offer in that unique Belvoir corner. Not that the audience were any less than marvelously entertained by this rotation of fate, even if some quickly decided to give up any hope of twisting and turning to see the actor behind them, contenting themselves with merely listening to the words they spoke.
