Zack Anthony Curran (Fiddler on the Roof, A Lie of the Mind ), Keane Fletcher (We Will Rock You, The Ten Tenors) and Andrew Kroenert (Dream Lover, Fiddler on the Roof) are bringing their highly acclaimed cabaret show, The 27 Club, to Ballarat for one performance this Friday night.

The show first came about when the trio decided they wanted to do a show together. After discussing various options, the conversation progressed to the concept of the 27 Club: a term used in reference to the unusually high number of musicians who have died at the age of 27.

Curran, Fletcher and Kroenert read through the long list of names listed in The 27 Club and discovered the rich material from these artists, despite the contrast of their troubled lives. They chose their five most favourite artists from the list and wrote a show. Their show, The 27 Club, highlights the music and lives of five members of the so-called 27 Club: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain.

Using the music as their starting point, Curran, Fletcher and Kroenert have developed a one hour show that looks at the darker side of the lives of these five members of The 27 Club through the people who knew them and the singers own diaries, in an attempt to consider how they went from great musical talents to such tortured souls.

After a successful season at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne, earlier this year, the trio are reuniting to take The 27 Club to Ballarat.

“We’re really excited about that. It’s the first time we’ve taken the show to a regional audience,” said Andrew Kroenert.

“Coming back to something for a second time, in particular, you have a bit of a clearer idea of what you want it to be thematically and what you want it to stand for as a piece,” explained Kroenert.

“It feels like coming home. We love the material so much and we’ve worked really hard and made some really amazing arrangements of some of these songs, which are really different to the original studio versions.”

Songs in the show include Joplin’s ‘Mercedes Benz’, Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’, Cobain’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and The Doors’ ‘Light My Fire’.

The show has attracted a very wide audience: fans of musical theatre and cabaret, as well as the fans of the individual artists remembered in this show. Kroenert said often audiences turn up because they are fans of just one of the artists and the show rekindles their love for this music.

“What we want the audience to take away from the show is just how influential these five artists were … but also what these five people achieved through their trauma … and particularly at such a young age,” Kroenert explained.
