Don Giovanni

TP Rating:
4
Venue:
State Theatre

The licentious anti-hero we, for the most part, cannot help being drawn to, Don Giovanni, stalks and weaves his ominous spell once again on the stage of the State Theatre. Opera Australia’s very successful Don Giovanni by Mozart has been resurrected with Teddy Tahu Rhodes storming his way magnificently through this demanding operatic role. It is a captivating performance, passionate, well acted and sung with control and finesse.

Griselda [NSW]

TP Rating:
5
Venue:
City Recital Hall

There’s a moment in Griselda when the audience is meant to clap, to applaud and show their appreciation for the splendor on display, and yet on the opening night this didn’t happen, and there was only silence.  It wasn’t that my fellow spectators were stunned into a submissive torpor by a performance destined for the record books (either positively or negatively), nor was it that some mysterious and rather immature divine force had deigned to reach down from their heavenly cloud and transform everyone’s hands into fist-sized throw cushions.  No, it was a garage door that did the trick.
