Punchline
BuST Co as a company makes a habit of presenting many different types of Theatre, Straight Plays, Musicals, and on this occasion- a traditional University Comedy Review.
I can’t imagine I would ever audition for one because to me they seem a lot tougher than Musicals to perform! All seven performers gave 100 million percent energy, and there was very little down time.
The format of the show was basically random sketches run together with Videos occasionally giving the actors a minute or so to catch their breath. I’ll comment on the Video’s first: they were of excellent quality. The editing must have taken hours, it was expertly done though. I don’t want to give much away, but I must say that the gender bending videos were my favourites, very funny, and in some cases, clever lyrics and brilliant choreography!!
The sketches themselves were very quick and punchy. There were HEAPS of them. I must say they were mostly suited to a younger, uni student crowd. You may like it, but don’t take your Grandma if she’s still got her hearing! Although some of the sketches were a little too low brow for my taste (perhaps because I work for ‘the man’ now), I think it was a huge achievement that every sketch got a laugh, when there were just so many. There were over 40 in the first act! The one liner’s flew at the audience thick and fast, and the audience lapped it up. My favourites were “Holy Healer”, “Musakah”, anything involving “Lazz and Stoph”, “No Homo”, “Morning Jog” and “Shane Proposes a Toast”.
All seven performers gave a 110% energy and I commend each one of them for being funny, which I think after seeing Punchline, maybe actually be harder than this Musical Theatre caper! (And less expensive, I’ve never heard of Comedy lessons!!!) I’d like to single out two though: Nick Rudich for great accents and a very laid back but affective style, and Toby Pollock for being.... well... pretty mental, and making me giggle the most!
I’d also like to congratulate Shane Savage for being a performer, director, video director and editor and general organiser de jour. What a mammoth effort you have put it, and it has certainly paid off!
I hope I haven’t given too much away! In closing I’d like to congratulate BuST Co for keeping their tickets prices low. This Thursday, Friday and Saturday you can have a great laugh if you see Punchline and it will cost you under $20. Not many companies can say that their ticket prices are that low.
Congratulations to everyone involved on as rib-tickling night out!
