Kaput
Slapstick and physical comedy - Charlie Chaplin was a master of them, as were Abbott & Costello, Jerry Lewis, Norman Wisdom and to a degree, Michael Crawford (especially as Frank Spencer in the TV series “Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em”).
At the moment, Adelaide is lucky to have a modern day master reviving this great art form - Tom Flanagan.
This Circus Oz and Tom Tom Crew performer is hilarious in his first solo show, Kaput.
The audience are invited into Cinema Kaput (the ‘Le Cascadeur’ tent of The Garden of Unearthly Delights) to view a movie. Unfortunately, the projectionist (Flanagan) is incredibly inept and not only manages to foul up the film reel, but precedes to destroy the movie screen, have a little romance on the side, and perform a classic piece of ‘shtick’ with wallpaper.
Flanagan knows his stuff and is the perfect clown - his resemblance to a younger, blond Wisdom and his extremely cheeky Chaplin grin certainly don’t hurt. He does it all: pratfalls, balancing, mime, physical and facial comedy, and even plays the kazoo (with and without the instrument).
As if all of this wasn’t hard enough, Flanagan entices an audience member to perform with him, instructing them via mime - not an easy thing to do!
A very funny, entertaining hour that is ideal for the whole family. Highly recommended as a great piece of entertainment during this year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival.
Kaput is KAPOW!
