It seemed much more than ‘one moment’ driving from the Mornington Peninsula to Geelong but on arrival I received an experience I truly did not expect and will never forget. I have now seen four productions of Jason Robert Brown’s masterpiece, but have rarely felt tears welling up from both excitement and sorrow. This show was a sensation.

For those of you unfamiliar with the show, it is a collection of character driven tales which are mostly wound up into a four minute song. In true music theatre form, these characters convey so much information and development within a short amount of time. The audience are given insight into why the characters have chosen their path, giving those watching an opportunity to reflect on their own personal experiences.

The astounding thing about Doorstep Ensemble’s production was that they have four excellent actors... who just happen to be the mightiest of singers. Being a four man show, with harmonies from heaven and hell, casting is delicate. Jolyon James and Jensen Overend are two outstanding performers with a hefty biography that was merely supported by their work in the show. The ever impressive Shandelle Cooke returns to our community on a ‘break’ between cruise liner gigs. Shandelle is not only looking ravishing on stage, but works with her fellow performers with ease and comfort. Amy Lehpamer, who recently received the MTGV award for her performance as Judas in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ sold her fragile moments with justice and conviction.

You will not hear better four part harmonies this year. That is all I can say.

Darlyn Ramondo also has a great history in our community and beyond. Her design ad direction for this production was simple yet poignant. The conceptual design is excellent and cannot be described. It was clear that Darlyn’s concepts were ‘all-rounders’ – designed through all the conventions. Outstanding moments include Surabaya Santa and I’m Not Afraid.

Musical direction was by John Shawcross. There was an excellent sound throughout the show with some good tempo decisions. The opening started slower than I anticipated but merely emphasised the harmonies and the anticipation of ‘leading to a new world’.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a must see. I am planning on attending again this weekend. Information in the Whats On section.
