Priscilla Queen of the Desert is Australia’s most successful homegrown musical, winning an array of awards on Broadway, The West End, Europe and Asia. Returning for a 10th anniversary celebratory tour, the show promises to be bigger and better than ever. Associate Director, Dean Byrant, regards this new production as the “ultimate” Priscilla.

Auditions have commenced in the search for Australia’s iconic trio of misfits and the twenty-four singers and dancers that will comprise the cast. Bryant said they are always looking for a particular type for Priscilla: hot and sexy guys, and fabulous women with amazing voices.

The women provide all of the live singing for the lip-syncing so we need the best voices in the country,” explained Bryant.

Despite an initial cull of applications, Bryant expects to see over 500 people through the audition process, but he knows what he needs.

It’s always great to see people with their own personality. Priscilla the Musical is very different to a lot of the musicals we get here in Australia, in that we build it exactly on the people, and we change the show based on who they actually are. So it’s really important when people are dancing or singing to see their own individuality.”

The huge interest in this musical doesn’t surprise Dean Bryant, who has been involved with Priscilla for the past decade.

Everyone knows Priscilla, so everyone wants to be a part of it,” explained Bryant.

It was a comment echoed by some of the hopefuls auditioning.

It’s such an iconic Australian musical. It’s full of colour, it’s full of glamour but it’s a really relevant story,” explained Seth, who had just completed his dance audition, which he described as being very fast, but also a lot of fun. “It was as camp as a row of tents!”

Another hopeful, Luke, remembers watching the movie of Priscilla with his parents and regards it as his first exposure to the LGBT world.

I was always fascinated by it and Mum would always be finding me in her dresses!” laughed Luke.

Auditions are continuing in the search for the perfect cast, although as Bryant admits, “The bus is, annoyingly, always the star of the show!”
