An Officer and a Gentleman

John Frost, Managing Director of The Gordon Frost Organisation, has announced an invitation-only presentation of the musical An Officer and a Gentleman in New York on May 13 and 14 at the 42nd Street Studios.

An Officer and a Gentleman, a musical based on the original screenplay by Douglas Day Stewart, is planned to have its World Premiere in Australia in 2011.

An impressive creative team has been assembled to bring this popular film to life on the stage. The book is by Douglas Day Stewart, author of the movie, and Sharleen Cooper Cohen. Music and lyrics are by Kenneth W. Hirsch and Robin Lerner. It is believed that the Oscar winning song ‘Up Where We Belong’, although not written by Hirsch and Lerner, will be featured in the musical. MTC’s Simon Phillips will follow up his highly successful direction of Priscilla Queen of the Desert – the Musical and The Drowsy Chaperone by helming this production.

Fame star Chris Durling (Nick Piazza) took the lead role of Ensign Zach Mayo in recent workshops of the production in Australia. The athletic Durling enjoyed the choreography involving jogging, push-ups and sit-ups. Durling is a natural favourite to take the lead role when the show debuts in Australia next year. Bert Labonte read the role of Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, a role that won Louis Gossett, Jr the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1982.

An Officer and a Gentleman is the second new musical to be announced for The Gordon Frost Organisation in recent times. The company has also acquired the rights to Dream Lover, written by John-Michael Howson and Frank Howson. Dream Lover tell the story of Bobby Darin, the singer, songwriter, actor and entertainer whose sensational career spanned the 1950s and 1960s. The music is comprised of the songs of Darin and others, including Splish Splash, As Long As I'm Singin', Mack the Knife, The Sea and Mammy.
