Hairspray open call auditions

  TRACY WHERE ARE YOU?

HAIRSPRAY OPEN CALL AUDITIONS COMMENCE AROUND AUSTRALIA ON APRIL 20 AND THE SEARCH FOR TRACY TURNBLAD BEGINS……

The global award winning production of HAIRSPRAY The Musical, directed by David Atkins and choreographed by Jason Coleman, opens on October 2 at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne.

On Tuesday 20 April, the producers and creative team of Hairspray will embark on a national tour of Australia to commence what is arguably the most grueling search for a major musical theatre role ever undertaken in Australia.

Open call auditions for the role of Tracy Turnblad and other roles (see casting brief below) will take place in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.

It is expected that Australia’s Tracy Turnblad, will be an unknown performer and is likely to be found in the same way that Nikki Blonsky (who starred in the 2007 Motion Picture alongside John Travolta) was found.  Blonsky’s day job was scooping ice-cream in Great Neck, New York before she was discovered and went on to major international success.

In HAIRSPRAY Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart and she has only one passion—to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in HAIRSPRAY! Welcome to the '60s!

If you think you have got what it takes to be Australia’s own Tracy Turnblad then you will be 5'3" or shorter, 17yrs – 25years old and you must be heavyset.  Outgoing, unstoppable, goodhearted with a vibrant, lovable, spirited personality and loves to sing and dance.

Turned up on the day :P

hahah i did actually go on the date specified above.

so embarrassing. The people there were like what, who? yeah it was quite a funny learning experience!

It will be an awesome show!

:D

ALL THE DATES ABOVE ARE WRONG!

Called up the Judith Wright centre to confirm for brisbane and the date for Brisbane is actually the 28th April 2010!

The dates for open audition werent on the website until recently so whoever posted this info should have confirmed it because I bet people rocked up to it today lol...

Under Age Limit

If you are under the specified age limit, I would highly recommend not turning up for the open call auditions. The producers have to see thousands upon thousands of other performers and you will most likely be turned away (harsh but true). But Don't fret, this show is going to be a HUGE success and will run for a minimum of 4 - 6 years in Australia & New Zealand (it has to anyway to recoup the millions of dollars it costs to produce). Actors contracts come up every 12 months and they will be auditioning for new Tracey's and Inez's every year. So take this time to perfect your skills and by the time you are the right age (or close enough) you might just get your big break.

I really want to audition for Tracy but...

I'm taller than 5'3"
Is that a concrete requirement or do you think they'll be kind of flexible on the height?

OMG I MISSED IT

Hi im a 15 year old girl and i missed the recent auditins in brisbane, i dont want a lead in this musical but would like to be part of the dancing group!!!!!
ARE THERE ANY MORE AUDITONS HAPPENING IN BRISBANE SOON!!!!!!

OMG MISSED IT

hey brisbane isnt till 20th

Age to Audition

My daughter is 15 and wanted to audition for Little Inez. After a great deal of runaround I spoke to a real human. Sorry to tell you younger ones, the producers have to abide by the laws that govern re employing kids in the theatre. You have to be 17 or over to audition. My daughter has a very long face right now.

WHAT?!

It said on dancelife.com that they wanted 15-25yr old for Inez! Whatzupwitu! Can someone please explain?

And on here it says its 15-25 as well http://www.africanoz.com/af_study/hairspraycastingbrief.pdf

I'm definitely going anyway!

Can I audition even if I'm caucasian but sing like a soul singer

I sang soprano with a female soul/jazz trio for three years and now sing with a blues/rock band. I have just finished a three year Arts degree major in Theatre Studies where I learnt accents and characterisation. Would I be able to audition for a role as one of The Dynamites?

Dancers

but i am only 14. can i still try out for little inez

i DO TOO!!

i am only 14 as well, and i really wanna audition for tracey...
however i dont think they will even audition people that arent 17
and if i turn up and they tell me to leave due to my age, i will most like;ly cry
i thought this was my big opportunity to break out into the business and then i saw the 17-25 and i was so heart broken...
can anyone tell me if we are allowed to audition if we are 14?

Should i go anyway?!!!

Do you reckon if you don't fit the description for Tracy you could audition anyway??!!!!
Cause i think i'm just gunna turn up :D
x

Oh. My. GOD!!!!!!!!!

That is all.

So if you are not african

So if you are not african american, or a heavy set female you can't audition? Am I reading this right? Are they not auditioning for ensemble also?

They are only holding OPEN

They are only holding OPEN CALLS for the roles listed above. To get an audition for the ensemble you would need to have submitted already.

open calls only for those parts

i think thats really silly and im rather disapointed theirs not more roles for people who arent black or fat who dont have an agent.. theres no other way to audition for the ensemble??

Dont worry sweet I am sure

Dont worry sweet I am sure the next 5ft6 White, blonde hair, blue eyed show will be auditioning next month ;)

get an agent

Australia is such a multicultural country and there are hardly any black (or even asian) people on tv and especially not in theatre, unless it's Miss Saigon or Lion King. Hairspray is giving those people a chance to perform. Clearly they are looking for these people thru open call auditions because most agents don't have many on their books (due to the lack of work for them in this country). So if you are a skinny white performer there are loads of roles for you out there, and if you're good enough to get into a show like Hairspray, you're good enough to get an agent.

Just think, a fat girl will NEVER get to play Roxie in chicago, or a black girl would never get to play Christine in Phantom...

Whoa

Read what you just wrote.... That was a bit harsh, don't you think? "...fat or black..." This is a great opportunity for certain people and you shouldn't demean it for them. If you seriously want a shot at everything out there, including ensemble roles in professional shows, then get yourself an agent - don't complain, ACT!

now you know how I feel !!!!

I think it's really silly and I'm rather disappointed on a DAILY basis that near ALL auditions are for skinny white girls.... Seize the day, it's the fat's girl go - so deal with it!!!! LOL

I'm Fat

but im taller than 5'3
so its not just about being fat or african american :P

Hairspray MD

Hi all,

Who is the Musical Director for Hairspray?

Chris :)

The musical Directors name is

The musical Directors name is Max (not sure of his last name) but i've heard he's brilliant!

And for people who dont fit the criteria 'exactly', I think you should still go and give it a shot... maybe you are what they are looking for, and if so then they can work around certain things. good luck!
