Don Giovanni

Mozart’s arch-villain will be brought to life in full technicolour glory with a brand new production of Don Giovanni from The Opera School Melbourne at the National Theatre 2-4 September.

If you thought there was nothing new to surprise you in one of Mozart’s most popular operas, then you won’t want to miss what The Opera School Melbourne has in mind for this very special production.

Our Don Giovanni is young, charming, cunning and utterly merciless, a man whose dalliances have left a trail of heartbreak and shattered dreams. This seemingly unstoppable villain finally goes too far in search of more intense pleasures and is made to face the terrifying consequences of his actions. With powerful and seductive music to match its characters, Don Giovanni could be described as an operatic version of The Bold and the Beautiful - but with class!

In our 21st century world, characters like Don Giovanni would soon be sent by the courts for corrective behaviour therapy to treat his addiction. Two hundred years ago it was the stuff of legend that was deemed safe for only one environment – the operatic stage. Thus Mozart’s magnificent opera was born.

The Opera School Melbourne’s slightly abridged Don Giovanni is an ideal vehicle for our young mega-talented enthusiastic 20-somethings who have embraced this exciting project with passion and purpose, and are sure to transfix the audience with their superb voices and acting skills.

Set design is by award-winning luxury designer Amanda Henderson (Gloss Creative), whose other job is designing Myer’s national fashion launches for supermodel Jennifer Hawkins. Our 16 performers will be a feast for the eye, with lighting design by Robert Taylor, and costuming by Chloe Greaves.

This brand new production of Don Giovanni is being directed by outstanding young director Cameron Menzies, with a professional orchestra conducted by youthful maestro Trevor Jones, and features special guest artist, bass Steven Gallop as the Commendatore.
