Submitted by K.E. Weber on Thursday, 7th Apr 2011
Café Scheherazade back for a return season.
fortyfivedownstairs has announced, following its sold out triumphant premiere season, that the theatre production of Café Scheherazadewill have a return season from 20 August – 11 September 2011.
Mary Lou Jelbart, fortyfivedownstairs founder and artistic director, said the response to the play has been overwhelming: “We exist to support new and adventurous Australian work and are thrilled that the premiere of Café Scheherazadewas met with such critical acclaim and huge audience demand – over 3,000 patrons came to the season and so many more were turned away. It’s another exciting venture in our tenth year – presenting the return season of Café Scheherazade with the original company and cast.”
Café Scheherazade, written by Thérèse Radic and based on Arnold Zable’s novel, shares the stories of Eastern European migrants in Melbourne – whose journeys and experiences of displacement and survival are universally resonant of refugee lives. The original Café Scheherazade in St Kilda was an Acland Street icon – the memories of its founders and regulars are extraordinary and their life experiences have contributed significantly to Melbourne’s cosmopolitan landscape.
Café Scheherazadeis a reminder to celebrate and embrace those refugees who continue to arrive in Australia from very diverse backgrounds of distress and displacement. Café Scheherazadeis produced and presented by fortyfivedownstairs and its premiere was supported by the Sunraysia Foundation, Arts Victoria, City of Melbourne, the Besen Foundation, the Kronhill Pletka Foundation, the Pratt Foundation and private donors.
