Getting cosy with Fab Nobs this winter...
10th July, 2008

In
my book, there’s no better way to spend a winter’s night than with
good food and wine, great company and of course, fabulous
entertainment. Throw in a good cause, and you have the icing on the
cake. But how often do you get them all rolled into one?! Luckily
Fab Nobs have managed to put it all together for us to create the
“Winter Fab Fest”- a special fundraiser on Friday July 18th
at Cafe 70, 70a Main Street, Croydon. The Winter Fab Fest promises
to be a fun night of wine tasting, yummy hot and cold food, games, a
huge raffle and lots of entertainment from your favourite singers
and musicians. The night will be a chance to catch up with members
of the Fab Nobs family and be updated on the progress of the new Fab
Factory and the future of the company. And of course, a chance to
support a wonderful theatre company that has certainly made its way
into my heart and the hearts of many others for the wonderful shows
they stage and the family feel to working with them.
I
spoke with President Leane Gooding about the “Winter Fab Fest” and
the future for Fab Nobs:
LM: How has the search for a home progressed since TP last spoke
with you (in the last article you'd lost the last factory)?
LG: "We have found a new home – Industry Place, Bayswater – we are
waiting on council approval (again!). We have had a 'think tank' at
the factory with a cross section of clever people – many ideas of
how to plan the factory with the best use of space. We will be
performing Zombie Prom in November in the new factory".
LM:
How has the search impacted the company?
LG: "The committee worked very hard at finding a new home- many
hours of searching, researching, and meetings. We found that the
patrons didn't like Fab Nobs performing in a 'regular' theatre and
much preferred the factory atmosphere. We floundered a little
without a home but we are back on track and are in the process of
planning 2009 shows."
LM:
What exactly is a "Winter Fab Fest" what can we expect from the
evening?
LG: "It’s basically a fundraiser. Café 70 will provide hot and cold
food all evening and Farm Gate wines will provide wine tasting with
the availability of purchase of their Yarra Valley wines all
evening. We have the following singers performing 1 or 2 songs
accompanied by Phil Hauesler on Piano: Jon Sebastian, Karl McNamara, Megan Coe, Karlie Gooding, Greg Beresniak,
Graham Andrew, Michael Butler and, of course, your good self Lizzie! We are hoping to have a 3 piece band
for dancing later in the evening featuring the talents of Daniel Puckey, Dave George, and Mark George. All this will be interspersed
with games/raffle etc…. just fun stuff ……… very casual."
Now that Fab Nobs have found a new factory, Leane outlined the
future shows for 2008/9 and beyond. The schedule includes:
Zombie Prom” in November 2008,
“Hangups, Heartaches and Headcases; A psychologist’s cabaret” with
Lizzie Matjacic (Date TBA)
"The Wedding Singer in April 2009
Play in July 2009 – TBA
Musical in November 2009 – TBA
I
also spoke with seasoned Fab Nobian Jonathan Sebastian, who will
also be one of the performers you will get to enjoy on the night,
about his experiences of working with Fab Nobs:
LM: How did you get involved in Fab Nobs?
JS: It was originally just a case of them doing a show that looked
like a bit of fun, and also with a director I wanted to work with...
plus I had seen a few shows out there and well, they are good and
it's always great to be part of something intimate / challenging and
of a high standard.
LM: Why do you keep coming back?
JS: I keep going back whenever I can basically due to the fact that
I love the people, the two shows (and one concert) I have done have
just been great relaxed experiences... I very much believe in
helping out wherever possible and even though these day’s performers
don't generally align to companies I think Fab Nobs is a company
that many performers want to align with.
LM:
What do you think Fab Nobs contributes to the Melbourne Amateur
Theatre scene?
JS: Firstly it's not amateur.... let's focus on the quality rather
than the fact that we as performers don't get paid for this.... and
as for quality well Fab Nobs is just simply consistent, due to their
reputation they always get the best teams, the best performers, as
for their contribution they have the ability to give not only
audiences but performers the chance to do something different, not
only by choice of show but setting.. It's a challenge at Fab Nobs,
you don't have the sets the $$ the venue, but what you do get is the
'challenge' as a performer, there is no hiding it's all up to
them... I challenge everyone to put themselves in that position....
For those of us who have had a joyful experience of working with Fab
Nobs as I have, there is no question that this is a company worthy
of support and continued success. Even if you have only ever seen a
Fab Nobs show or know of their reputation as a great company, come
along and support Fab Nobs so that the opportunity to see or perform
in innovative, challenging and interesting shows in a unique venue
can continue. I for one would love to see Fab Nobs keep going from
strength to strength and hope that old, current and future Fab
Nobians can come along for a great night and catch up with old
friends!
