‘Expressionism: A short play revolution’ is the next chapter of original works
Waterdale Originals is an exciting annual project of the SPX Waterdale Players Inc (WATERDALE) which encourages people to write, develop, direct and perform 8-15 minute short plays. In celebration of the fifth year of the project WATERDALE is offering $1000 to the play judged by audience vote to be the best. The most popular play will be awarded a $1000 prize which is split between the writer, director and cast of the winning play.
SPX Waterdale Players Inc. (WATERDALE) is a youth based theatre group formed in 2004 which provides opportunities for Melbourne youth to develop their skills and further their involvement in all aspects of theatre performance and production in a supportive and professional environment. The typical age range of members is between 17 and 26 but both older and younger members have been featured in productions.
This season’s ‘Expressionism’ features 10 original Australian short plays exploring such diverse topics as: advice giving hairdressers, depressed mothers, a dead teddy bear, boys who find a fortune, arson, hibiscus body wash, A Scotsman, A bus stop, flying boots. And include titles such as : Shattered, Domestic Armchair, Diamond Dogs, Couch, Wrong from Write, Rain, Happiness Foiled, Beasts, House Warming, The Things we say to Strangers
The project is being produced by Shane Sanfilippo who is a dedicated supporter of youth based theatre companies. He has previously worked with another youth based company, Purely Pensive Productions, when he directed their offering of Spring Awakening – a play adapted by Shane and Jeremy Ives from German playwright Franz Wedekind’s (who was a major influence in the development of Epic Theatre) tragedy.
Ives’ and Sanfilippo’s adaptation focused on eight adolescents and the adults that control their lives. It explored themes still prominent in today’s society including physical and sexual abuse, drug and alcohol dependency, sex, suicide, confusion over sexuality, school pressures and most importantly, relationships.
As well as delivering this challenging piece of theatre Shane has been involved in the staging of musicals Pippin, Fame and the Mikado for Waterdale as well as preparing for the 2011 production Annie.
