The Marriage of Bette and Boo by Christopher Durang

The Marriage of Bette and Boo by Christopher Durang – part of the 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

“The Marriage of Bette and Boo” is by renowned American playwright, Christopher Durang. An autobiographical play, it tells the story of Durang’s own family and upbringing. It is a biting, black, satirical comedy that manages to always keep a degree of compassion for all its dysfunctional characters. There is Durang’s mother Bette, who, despite warnings from doctors about the chances of having still-born children, simply cannot resist going through with more and more pregnancies. His aunts feature also- One who is clearly mentally unwell and the other who possesses a sardonic wit.

Durang’s grandmother is a master in denial, and his grandfather is a victim of a stoke who cannot speak correctly; a point that his wife deals with by asking him to keep silent. Set in an era where nothing was politically correct, the play also features the family of in-laws, known as the Hudlocks. Karl Hudlock is a sexist, overtly nasty man at times, who has re-named his down-trodden wife “Soot”; having forgotten what her original name is. He calls his son (Boo, who is also the male protagonist of the play) “Boor”.

Durang takes his satirical pen to the “old-fashioned” family, and also to religion and alcoholism. There’s a somewhat drunken priest who enjoys doing impersonations of frying bacon during his sermons, and a host of other humorous, insightful perceptions of the Catholic faith and how it can shape people.

“The Marriage of Bette and Boo” by Christopher Durang is being performed by the Adult Drama Students from Drama With A Difference – one of Australia’s leading, independent drama schools. This is a recreational drama group, with some of the actors having performed numerous times in the past, while others are braving time on stage for the first time.
