1812 Theatre Company
What to prepare:
Please prepare 2(two) contrasting songs to sing. You will be required to provide sheet music in the correct key or a suitable backing track. You may not get to sing both, you may only be required to sing a small piece of one of your numbers – if only requested to sing a small portion of your selection, make sure you sing something that will show off the best of your vocal abilities. Do not take this as a sign that you have not been successful rather that we may have heard sufficient to show us what you are capable of – auditions are tough enough as it is.
You will be asked to read a small portion of the script; these excerpts will be available at the audition so please arrive earlier than your allotted time to look them over. Due to the natural of this show you will be required to read against the director or an assistant. Please read the character descriptions to familiarise yourself with the personality of the character you may be interested in – this will help you enormously at audition time. Don’t be afraid to ask the director for further explanation if needed at the time of your audition.
As the play is set in Newark, New Jersey the accent used will be American. There are fabulous tutorials on Youtube for accent if you need some help. (look up Amy Walker for some great tutorials)
Sister Mary Regina (Reverend Mother) (50+)
Vocal Range: Mezzo
Is the Mother Superior of the Little Sisters of Hoboken. She tries to be strict and keep order, but things often get out of her control. She grew up in a circus family and her “showbiz” background and sense of humour always shine through her attempt of creating a tough exterior.
Sister Mary Hubert
Vocal Range: Alto
Is the Mistress of Novices. She is second in command to Mother Superior. At times, she finds it difficult to deal with problems she firmly believes are created by Mother Superiors ineptness. She and Mother Superior have a healthy and humorous rivalry. She is very practical.
Sister Robert Anne
Vocal Range: Mezzo/Alto
Is a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, New York. She is one tough cookie but has a heart and soul of gold. She feels she has real theatrical potential and is constantly frustrated by Reverend Mother’s refusal to let her “star” in the show.
Sister Mary Paul (aka Amnesia)
Vocal Range: Soprano/Mezzo
Was hit on the head with a crucifix and does not remember who she is. We discover late in the show that she is a country singer who jump-started her career as the first nun to sing at the Grand Ole Opry. Though her memory is coming back slowly, she often seems a “little vacant” but innocently endearing.
Sister Mary Leo
Vocal Range: Soprano
Must be able to do some ballet
Is a novice who has entered the convent with the firm desire to become the first nun ballerina. She is sweet and dedicated to her dance. Must be able to do some ballet.
Whilst this show is not a big dance show it does require all nuns to have an ability to move very well and all nuns will need to be able to tap to some extent. You will be required to attend a movement audition as well, please ensure you wear comfortable footwear and clothing at the movement call.
The audition panel will determine whether call backs will be required and you will be advised if you need to attend.
Please remember the audition panel want you to succeed and know just how tough and nerve racking it can be to audition. They are on your side!
